oil question, '11 328i

I'm looking at fcpeuro oil change kits and I'm not sure if I should be using 5w40 or 5w30 for my 328i xDrive. Also not really sure what the difference is.
I live in the northeast and the temperature is often below freezing in the winter, does that impact either one?
This is my first oil change myself, any feedback is appreciated

The "5W" part of the weight is the cold number. The 30 and 40 bit refer to the hot viscosity.

Since I plan on doing some autocross and light track work, I am using 5w-40 to enhance protection at temps beyond what the car would ordinarily see. I think you will be fine with either option.

I believe BMW recommends 0W30. (Used to be 5W30 until maybe 3 years ago?)

But yes: I’m sure you’d be good with either. I just run what they recommend because I figure why not.

Years ago dealer always put in 5W30, which may be 0W30 now. When I change oil I use either Castrol Edge 0W40 (not LL01) or 5W40 (LL01). These made the engine run smoother than the dealer 5W30, IMO.

Mobil oil selector says 0W30 or 5W30, and that 5W40 can also be used: https://www.mobil.com/en/lubricants/...1/6854/954/0/0

If that is the case, I would use 5W40 that meets the LL01 standard.

We use 0w30 on the n52s that come in for and oil service. I highly recommend using 0w30 in your n52 especially in cold climate. Cold start is where a majority of wear on the engine happens so the lower the first number, 0w, the better.

0W means the oil meets SAE spec for the pour test at -40 Deg.F. 5W means the oil meets SAE spec for the pour test at -35 Deg.F. In Boston winter temperatures, there literally is no difference in performance of either weight.

A manual transmission can be set to "comfort", "sport", and "track" modes simply by the technique and speed at which you shift it; it doesn't need "modes", modes are for manumatics that try to behave like a real 3-pedal manual transmission. If you can money-shift it, it's a manual transmission. "Yeah, but NO ONE puts an automatic trans shift knob on a manual transmission."
