G80 xdrive vs. 2023 C63S
Here's a new one that hopefully hasn't been done before, the M3 xdrive vs. the new C63S.
These should be the closest competitors when it comes to performance and price point and relative size/luxury (RS5 not in the same class). The new C63S should have around 650hp with the hybrid drive train (443hp 4-cylinder + 200hp electric) and with that comes all wheel drive. The 650ish hp is only available for short bursts but 550hp should always be on tap. The C63 should get a full EV mode for those that want to creep around without using gas, but it will be a heavy beast. Pros of the C63: - Interior feels more upscale (albeit less sporty) - hand-built engine (FWIW) - F1 tech on the turbo (should eliminate lag with a sandwiched electric motor on the turbine shaft) - EV mode (I'm moving to a downtown townhouse and want to be able to creep in and out) - lot's of torque down low - maybe bigger than 1 piston rear calipers (lol) - Fuel economy (not something that's ever crossed my mind but recent events and administration have me thinking now) Cons of the C63: - way complex (but I don't intend to keep longer than 4 years anyway) - narrow rear fenders look dinky (why MB?) - 4 cylinder... (sound) - probably more $ than M3 - Looks too much like a standard C class - Weight What say you? I am going to hedge my bet and get on the list for the C63 now and more info should be dripping out soon (my dealer said they have a training on the car this Friday and he'll let me know what he finds out). But M3 is my #1 right now as it sits. Last edited by Schn3ll; 03-02-2022 at 09:56 AM.. |

The 4 banger kills it for me.

The main reason to get a AMG for me was the V8. It gave the car character. It was more than just a luxury sedan. Sure, the C63S always looked good, but it also sounded good too. The car might be faster than a G8X but let's be honest here, any car in this category is going to be fast regardless. Hell, any of the previous gen cars were stupid fast in a straight line too.
You have to look at the overall driving experience here. The looks, how it sounds, the tech, the comfort, the luxury items, and most importantly, how it drives. If the car weighs like two metric tons, it's going to not be as engaging. Will it have a long wheelbase? How will the transmission shift? Does it hunker down in corners and feel smaller than it is? What about steering feel? These are all the questions you need answered before you can say which one you prefer. The C63 doesn't offer a manual so for me, that's a non-starter. I still enjoy the art of driving, i don't chase lap times by strangers on a racetrack halfway across the planet, that truly doesn't matter to me. However, to some it might. TLDR, you have to drive both cars to form an opinion.

I have no idea how that C will drive, sound, perform --- way too much supposition on a car that is NOT out yet vs one that is crushing it currently.
Ill wait for the rubber to meet the road.

It will out perform the out going C63 and be more advanced overall.
MB C63 enthusiasts will flock to it no matter the criticism. I've just never had an interest in owning a C63. It's a sweet ride just not my style. G80 took heat on the design yet people are paying a premium and signing up for a wait lists and leaving deposits etc. G80 Pure all day every day… |

The way I see it is like this. If this is our last hurrah for petrol… why on earl would I get the same engine I can get in a Honda Accord, idc if it has 800 horsepower.
Straight six, flat 6, v8, v12 whatever we can get while it's still around |

My previous car was a w205 63s but as soon as I heard 4 cylinder hybrid I went strait to a g80 m3. it's the deal breaker. It just rips the soul out of the car if your just looking for a strait line fast car go for the Tesla
It's sad but we rely have to enjoy theses last Combustion motors |

"And for that reason... I'm out"
+1, surely this will have the same horrible sound just like that dumb little CLA45 AMG (also a 4 banger ). But maybe merc can work some magic and make it sound decent. I wouldn't be surprised, but my hopes are not high. |

I would rather go full EV than have a 4 banger/EV combo in a midsize car.

I'm curious about the weight distribution of this hybrid C63. The 4 cylinder engine and two motors is going to lead to a lot of weight at the front of the car. It's going to be vary fast in a straight line but to me it feels like it's not going to be nearly as special without the AMG V8.

Way worse than the F80's and G80's? Lol. I can live with my F-82 now with Akro full and AA EQ. Still would say, I have not heard one that sounds good though. The G cars a little better but not much from what I'm hearing. It's ear vomit 🤮

I am also concerned about the reliability of the powertrain, high strung turbo 4 (most powerful production 4 banger ever made), an electric assist turbo (sandwiched in between turbine housings to spool turbo, never been done before), 48v starter motor, electric motor (new to MB), 2 speed tranny on electric motor (new to MB), and then wrap this all up into a brand new C class platform with new tech in the interior and you have one complex car. I wonder if techs are just going to replace cars if things start to break, rather than repair. I don't keep my cars more than 3 years, so reliability is not a huge concern for me, just the inconvenience and pain in the ass of driving a crappy loaner for X amount of time (this is where I miss owning a 911, I would usually get a nice Cayman or more recently a Taycan loaner). |

It's the 4 cyl for me. Unless they truly did something spectacular which I highly doubt (at this price point). Let's see.

Is there even going to be a trunk with that battery back there? This is where I think manufacturers are just better off going straight to EV as this combines the complexity of EV and ICE both in one car. Throw in the fact that Mercedes has been struggling mightily with reliability and this seems like a generation to pass on.

I'd rather go Model 3 Performance rather than this half-assed effort by Merc. Seriously, not sure what they're smoking over there.
Know what you're good at, and hone that craft to perfection. Playing someone else's game where they are ahead of you already is a dumb idea. |

4 banger doesn't bother me but the lack of a manual tranny is an instant deal-breaker. With a manual it would otherwise be a strong contender for my $$. Same with the Audi RS5.
