Likelihood of more hp for '23?
Please forgive if I missed the discussion on this if it has already been had. I've seen the rumors and speculation about the B58 getting a bump in hp in '23, but those discussions where limited to other models (not the M240i). I test drove a '22 last week and the sales associate, who I found both knowledgeable and helpful, suggested I think about ordering a '23 because he thought it likely the there would be an increase in power. Is that a reasonably well established possibility, flaky speculation, or complete and utter caca from the darkest bowels of the interwebs?
I sure was impressed with the '22. Definitely a different beast than my '18 and preferable as a daily when compared to my A90. |

Yes there will be an increase in power in '23.
It will be called an M2. 😀👍 I'm a little skeptical that BMW will increase the G42 power any time soon. It is already a 50 HP bump over the outgoing F22 generation and utilizes the up to date B58tu version of the motor. The car is powerful as hell as it is. If you need more than 382 HP, there are tuning options available. I don't know why a dealer would dissuade you from purchasing now, unless their allocation for this car is in doubt for the near future and they don't want to disappoint you.

Coming from an F22 I feel the same.
I have only driven my G42 for a couple of weeks, trying not to push it during the break in period, then have been laid up with some medical issues. But my impression so far is that it is about as quick off the line as the F22 and definitely quicker up top. Very easy to get into triple digits. Do I need a faster car? Practically, no. Emotionally, I would consider stage one piggyback tune like Dinan or JB+ , just for my ego and to say I was close to 400 HP😬

These cars are underrated. Probably around 425hp (instead of 382) based on the dynos I've seen for a RWD Z4 with the same engine. They are dynoing 380hp to the wheels.
BMW might change their marketing to reflect that higher number but I seriously doubt they will run more boost/actual power for 23 model year. |

This is probably what your dealer was referring to. Like others have said, I am not sure if it will trickle down to G42 for next year or if this update will trickle down for the LCI. Looks like the bigger more expensive models will the be first ones to receive the update engine.

Based on this calculator, and BMW's claim of 0-60 mph in 4.1 seconds, the engine needs about 407 hp to accomplish that feat. Probably safe to assume the B58 is underrated as often believed, and maybe in the 25-30 hp range.

I mean its probably closer to 400-410 hp but who cares. Its harder to find a dyno that has AWD however so when I want to get it checked its not easy around my city. The new Lexus IS500 has 472hp however that car is slower than any M240i unless its a top speed question. Stock I have raced "unofficially" against a 450hp Camaro and a X4M comp. I beat the X4M and the camaro I was neck and neck with but didn't use launch control. The cars are pretty quick acceleration wise but around 110+ it doesn't pull quite as hard. If we ran higher boost numbers we could definitely fix that part.
Reality is with Electric cars its very tough to even have this discussion when cars are all getting to the limits of "fast" or "quick" People have logged 0-60 with launch control around 3.7 or 3.8 seconds. Now that isn't in the 2's but its pretty fast. Point is we are close to the limits on the 0-60 part so its more about the 60-120 pull.

This is an interesting question. As far as the M240i(x), it's already in the sweet spot IMO considering there exists an M2. Now for the 230i(x), I can see bumping the power of this B48/46 permutation up to the 270hp version mentioned in the future model thread stickied - maybe a slight torque bump over 300 ft-lbs too
Strongly considering the G42 as my next vehicle, and actually leaning toward the 230ix.
