Creaky steering wheel?

Yeah so I'm back with another sound related question, lol.

My steering wheel is creaky. It's not really during normal turning, but when I grip it/do anything that involves an in and out force rather than left and right it makes a creaky plastic sound.

I don't want to have the dealer think I'm an asshat, is this normal? Should I care about it? Am I being knit picky?

Not being a smarty, but why would you need to put any in/out force on it? Is the in/out force pushing forward or pulling back on the steering wheel?

Whenever making a sharp left or right, it's kind of impossible for me to do a perfect left to right steer without a little bit of pulling or pushing depending on the direction (severe scoliosis, just quite literally how my arms move "straight).

It's mostly on the pushing in that I notice a creak. I can't pinpoint where it's coming from, I've felt all around the wheel while getting it to do it and im not feeling anything/able to mute it by keeping my hand on something, so definitely coming from inside the housing.

I read in some cases that pulling up and down, in and out several times on the steering column (as if you were adjusting the tilt and telescopic part of the steering column) helped. Also, in another BMW forum, the owner had his steering wheel removed, and the service department greased several steering components and that took care of it. Worth trying the first one and if it doesn’t work, hit the dealership and have them address it. Good luck on a quick resolution.

Mine did that too when I first got the car
Since then it’s getting better and after 15k miles I don’t really notice it anymore

Same issue here. Creaky noises from in/out forces especially at the 9 and 3 position on the wheel for me. I’ve also got some form of a buzzing noise and not sure if it’s part of the wheel or further front in the dash area. I’m around 15K in miles and haven’t tried the tilting / telescoping idea yet.

Had the same thing until I removed the front steering wheel trim and put some tesa tape along key contact areas, those being the contact points on the edge of the trim. Instructions on how to remove the trim here:

Yes you are not alone. I got cracking sound when i press the left side near the airbag. Thinking of getting carbon fiber trim and fixing this in one go

Mine did too. Took to the dealer, took care of it under the warranty. I think they put some tape inside the wheel.

Also suffering the creaking steering wheel. It's the silver plastic surround that seems to be the cause. Good to know that dealers have taken action here - I will add that to my next visit.

I had creak with mine at first, after changing the silver trim to a carbon the issue went away.

Looking at the silver trim afterwards I believe one of the plastic tabs which hold the silver trim on at the top of the wheel above the cruise controls wasn’t located correctly. Before there was a little bit of play there, its solid now with no movement.

My 230xi steering wheel is quiet, but when making sharp turns with my M2's steering wheel -- to back car into the garage -- I hear faint sounds (squeaks) from the steering wheel. I probably put some push/pull force on the wheel as I am twisting around to look over first one shoulder then the other to make sure the car is going into the garage centered in the garage door opening.

So far the noise is not loud. Not bothersome. Just hear the noises.

Should you care about the noise you hear? Well, if the noise bothers you then yeah. The noise falls under NVH (noise vibration harshness) and does not belong in a BMW.

My wheel is creaky, mainly when it is warm out. Although I mentioned this to the dealer, I got the classic "cannot duplicate the concern." I found the creaking subsides when you pull the top of the silver trim away from the wheel. This is the silver trim at the 12 o'clock position on the wheel, you can pop it away from the wheel with not too much force and just your fingernails. I added some fabric tape between the silver trim and the wheel (added between the two surfaces) and I think the noises are gone...for now.

My squeak solved, might work for you too?

I first placed some paper between the trim as shown in the photos. Then, once I knew this was the issue I trimmed the paper (better than shown) with black fabric tape stuck to it. Then slid the template back in, just out of sight and issue solved. I checked I could remove it it by sliding in thin card and pushing out the paper. So nothing permanent.

I confirm this works. I did similar on mine, except I used hockey tape (fabric tape). The top of that silver trim can be pulled partially off quite easily. I shoved the fabric tape between the wheel and the silver trim like in your picture, out of sight. The wheel has been basically silent since.

Installed carbon fiber steering wheel trim fixed the issue. Steering feels rock solid without any flex or noise

Got it from AE:

I found these tabs weren’t attached. I removed airbag, tapped all the contact points and made sure all tabs snapped in.

100% quiet now

I have a '23 and the silver plastic trim is the culprit on my steering wheel.
Pressing the trim alone makes the sound.
