N55 mystery piece of plastic found in oil pan.

Anybody have a guess? I'm thinking timing chain guide/area/bit?
It has a small tab on one side.

I think it's the tab from the Timing chain guide lower left. The little tab is part of the plastic holding the guide onto the metal frame.

^^^^With that ^^^^I'm imagining the plastic rail is very slightly jumping and bouncing off the frame to the point where it may catch the edge and then get destroyed by the chain.

More car specific. Possibly picture #3 but different color.

Not sure, but could be. Do you have a good BWM Indy you can check with? See your in the Space coast area as I am. I use Pierre's Place in Melbourne.

No clue what that is, but very curious what you find out. I'm on Space Coast too. Can vouch for Pierre (Not to mention, he is pretty fast on the autocross course!).

Have you changed the valve cover, or removed the valve cover on this car? This piece looks like a black tab piece that supports this smaller piece inside of the N55 valve cover. If I remember correctly it is near the internal PCV system on the valve cover. I have replaced two N55 valve covers, on two different cars. IT looks like this is it. This piece can easily break off when placing the valve cover back onto the head, as it just kind of loosely clips in. I am doing a horrible job at explaining but maybe someone can back me up or provide pictures of what I am talking about.

I found a picture. Notice the green little highlight, not the best angle but there is a tab that looks just like that right there. It holds on to the extended rectangular piece directly below it. I know because on my X5 35i the rectangular piece wanted to keep popping out from that little black tab. So I got plenty of good looks at it.

That is a piece of the timing chain guide as others have said. The good news is the oil pickup tube has mesh on the end so it won't get sucked up into the engine. The bad news it's a piece of your timing chain guide.
