G80 Laser LED Upgrade Retrofit

Has anyone had any success doing a standard LED to laser LED upgrade to a 2022 G80? I swapped my standard LED's with G80/G82 OEM laser LED's and they don't read the car. I have heard they need new modules and after market coding, but is not a guarantee they work. Some dealers told me their system can't override the headlights since the car chassis only can read what it came with from the factory. I have seen G20's do the retrofit. Maybe when the G80 LCI is out there will be a way to do this? I see the OEM laser LED's for sale, so I am wondering if anyone has actually done this swap successfully. Any input is appreciated.

I'm not sure anyone has successfully done it yet... I have seen the laser lights for sale though...around 7k for the pair. I'm sure you can get it for a little cheaper used.

OP, I would sell the car and get another one with laser lights or a different brand car while the car market is still hot.

This is just confirmation bias based on what I'm reading on this forum, but I feel like if BMW offered a retrofit service for any sort of reasonable price...they would make millions.

The "retrofit service" that carmakers prefer—and makes them billions—is to sell more cars.

Hah, true, but when they can't source half the parts for those new cars on an ever changing basis, charging all the people posting about retrofitting laser headlights an extra couple grand for a 5 minute software upgrade...also not a bad option. Assuming of course, that it really is that easy.

Yeah, and as soon as they come up with this upgrade plan, all of a sudden you'll start hearing: "Anyone else getting bumped to a later build week? Apparently the factory's out of headlight assemblies? WTF?"

Fair point. My dealer did advise me that the lasers were largely pointless in the US, but I'm glad I ignored them and paid to indulge my "powerful headlight" fetish.

Seeing well at night is hardly a fetish, unless you're just turned on by the blue plastic inserts...

But hopefully we'll see a software update in the next few months (?!) that encodes the full laser functionality that they get in Europe.

If there was an easy way to get those blue plastic inserts installed in my standard lights I'd be all over it. It's really the only thing I feel I'm missing out on without the laser lights.

A little FYI, those blue plastic inserts actually illuminate outside of the US.. We just don't get them here because they supposedly resemble emergency lights 👎🏻

I think the best part of them is that you get the full "angel eye" rather than just the lines on the bottom that they normal headlights have

Exactly. My purchase was about half "they look better" and half "I want the best option or I'll have FOMO". Definitely was not anticipating the recent headlight changes, so hopefully I'll get to reap that unexpected benefit as well.

I just spent ~2 weeks with a rental A200d in Scotland, and the headlights were "Mercedes LED". They were...PATHETIC in "normal" mode - so dim, so aimed downward, and with such abrupt/precise cutoffs that they wouldn't even light up the reflective paint on the bollards used to mark the sides of the often narrow and unlit countryside roads. I've never been afraid to drive at night like I was with this car, not with any form of LED, xenon, projector, or garbage sealed beam reflector lamp like I was with this car and its "modern" lights. On the flip side, you hit the brights and I'm pretty sure the car was visible from space - insane distance and coverage. Too bad I couldn't just roast oncoming traffic, because the only way to drive safely was with the brights on. Maybe could have fixed this by aiming them up (which I didn't, no tools plus rental car), but who knows if then they'd be dazzling people.
