CA license plate style

Hello! I am relocating to SoCal coming July and was wondering about the license plate styles. I have seen traditional cali plate with white background with blue lettering. I have also seen black background with yellow lettering. Is the style something you can choose? Or are they phasing one style over the other?

You can pick either. There are some others such as the whale tail etc.

These are called SPECIAL INTEREST PLATES. I just ordered the black plate with yellow font (1960's Legacy). You usually need to get your traditional White plate with blue font first, then apply for the special plates. It takes 3 months to get it, and they tack on a small fee on your yearly registration.

Oh damnit I didn't know that. I ordered a month ago. I guess I'll be rocking the white and blue for awhile!

Thanks for your replies! I am thinking black with yellow lettering plate would look nicer with g8x.

On covid thing. In Washington state, you are always issued a new plate but this time around i was asked if I wanted to keep the old plate. Was told new one would 6+ months.

This is legal, as well, although, I don't know how well it would work on the G8X.

Yeah, it would be, for sure. It definitely wouldnt lay flat. If it was a smaller one, like they use in the EU, it would work.

Just to update I got my black plates today. Took about a month. I guess production is caught up!

Wait you got a custom black and yellow plate in 1 month? Or was it sequential?

Nice! So it looks like as long as it isn't custom, the wait isn't too bad

California license plates are made at Folsom State Prison, by inmates. They're probably locked up, or it's Covid related.

Late last year I order custom and after 3 months I gave up and ordered sequential. It came in about a month.

Another option if you have a car on order and want the plate to arrive about the same time is to order the custom plate for a different car. It's only a few bucks to then reorder as a sequential plate (which will arrive fast) and then transfer the custom. Downside is if I get the timing wrong I'll be driving a Jeep Wrangler with APEXCSL plate.

California has a horrible selection of custom / special interest plates... It's ridiculous.

You can go on the CA DMV site and see what options you have but there isn't much, unless you're super into Snoopy... Not even a LEM (Law Enforcement Memorial) option.

Saw a pick up truck at the car wash today that had new CA plates that were black with white lettering. That may be a new option.
