California Registration Requirements

I went out of state and got my M4 at MSRP in North Carolina. When I was doing the paperwork, they said I had to get an "inspection" when I got back to California. From looking at the DMV website, it looks like I need a smog test certificate and a vehicle verification certificate.

Is this all? Has someone on here also gone through the California registration process with an out of state dealer?

If you have AAA it will be the easiest way to handle it. You will need to do a vin verification, smog and pay taxes to register

You'll have to get the smog and VIN verification. The VIN verification can be done at DMV, make an appointment for that. I tried unsuccessfully to to do the VIN verification through the CHP when I imported my M3 CS from Washington State to CA.

Incorrect. New car purchased out of state will need the smog check

Just double checked myself. I was wrong. Deleting my old comment.

- Verification at DMV
- Smog Check (independent) and they do try and charge more for expensive cars so watch out!
- Pay use tax (!!!!! which can be a lot)

I can confirm you will need a smog check --- for a 50 state legal, new car. It's ridiculous but I learned the hard way a couple years ago with a different car. And, they did a physical inspection of the car too.
