2006 325i Steering Wheel Lock
My sisters 06 325i got the yellow steering wheel sign and could not start car.
we tried everything. and it got towed. indy in NJ says if he can't fix it, it has to go back to dealer for steering column replacement? sounds weird. why can't they replace it. any ideas for this car what to do |

My Indy replaced mine. It could have been most likly started if you cleared the error and reset the fail count but it wouldn't have fixed the problem on an ongoing basis. It's another lame BMW design error like the No protection for the Front Main Oil seal that can take out your engine in any E90. |

My 06 occasionally gives me the yellow light. But you said you tried EVERYTHING and it wouldn't start.
All I do is disconnect the battery and reconnect it. The car starts. I only get this error every 6-8 months. I also never turn the car off with the steering wheel crooked. This way it puts no pressure on the locking mechanism. I also ensure the battery is fully charged every 4-6 months. But you "tried everything." I'm not sure how we can help you. Quote:

anyways i would be shocked if the indy can't repair the issue or replace the damn column. if they refer me to the stealership i will expose their name. they are highly rated on bimmershops so hard to believe they can't replace a steering column |

A lot of the time the column doesn’t need replacing, the "ELV counter" just needs to be reset. Do you know if the Indy did this? Sounds like they have no clue what they're doing.
Do you have any diagnostic software available to you to do this yourself? |
