What happened to the trunk of my M240
Recently did a spoiler delete on my M240, previous stock spoiler has been removed no problem, new spoiler was put on. Walked into my garage this morning and noticed it seems rather swirly. Photo is included below. I cant notice it in daylight, only when my car is in the garage under artificial light. You can somewhat see it during the day, but you have to really try hard to notice it. In the garage under artificial light, it sticks out like a sore thumb.
Is this something I should be worried about or is this something a shop can easily buff out? thanks |

If those scratches easily disappear when wet, then they are only light clear coat scratches and should be able to be buffed off easily. No need to worry. A light polishing compound and DA buffer will take care of it
The shop should have been much more careful when removing the old spoiler. That's most likely when the scratches were 'installed' if not during transit. Edit: I think I read that wrong.. you did it! Lol but still no big deal. The scratches are very light and should easily buff off without much hassle |

I attached 2 separate images. I tried to wet the car but the water runs right off. It doesn't have a ceramic coating or anything, but one picture is the surface when its dry, and the other is with water ontop of it before it runs off. Is it able to be buffed out like normal or am I screwed? I used a 3M stripe wheel to remove the adhesive. I used it at fairly slow rpm, and didn't hold it in the same spots for a long time, I kept the wheel moving. Surely I haven't burned through the clear coat? 1st image is the scratch surface dry 2nd image is the surface wet and covered in water |

Nah you should be fine! Hard to tell from the photos but it seriously looks like very minor swirling. Especially if you can't see it in regular daylight. You can have a shop do it or DIY if you're up to it

I had a similar issue because I had the original spoiler wrapped gloss black and the morons at the shop decided to use a straight razor and cut up my trunk lid big time so when it was removed I had a bunch of marks. It took BMW an hour to sand and polish looks good as new! |

Here are a few different shots. I am thinking of going to a shop tmrw to get a professional assessment. Ive included a daylight photo as well. Tried to take it from the best angle that shows it the most. There is also another daylight photo which is just a photo of the rear as it appears normally, no crazy angles, just how the car looks right now if you look at it normally. Also, if it means anything, I cannot feel any of these scratches with my finger or the tip of my nail |

Yep those are definitely clear coat scratches and will buff off. May require a light sanding for some of the deeper (whiter) scratches, but nothing major at all.
Like mentioned above, you can take it to BMW. I would recommend a reputable detail/body shop who may have more experience |

I'd be willing to entertain two bets…
1. The paint can be corrected easily and inexpensively. 2. The paint was damaged by the (spoiler) adhesive surface prep. Some bingo applied the chemical too widely instead of keeping it to where it was needed. |

The factory spoiler that sits where the scratches are directly on the trunk, or my spoiler that I put on which hangs off the trunk?

You may be able to remove those yourself by hand.
First remove any wax. (The wax will keep compounds and polishes from being able to do its work. I would try a mild rubbing compound (i like Mequires Ultimate compound) then polish with Mequires Ultimate polish. (you may start with the polish first to see if that does the trick, if not go to the compound. This is not an aggressive compound and is easy to use. Normally one uses those with a DA polisher but for a small area like that hand work would be fine, I'll bet you can get rid of most (if not all) of those with the compound. The fact that the outline of the area appears to be the exact size and shape of the factory spoiler tells me the paint may have been in this condition as it was delivered to you. You simply revealed it. Maybe the factory spoiler was installed before the paint/clearcoat was fully cured even? Anyway based on your photos this is something paint correction should be able to resolve as others have stated. |

Thank you to everyone who replied to this thread! I took it to a well known shop in my area and had them take care of it. $100 CAD later and you cant even see anything wrong with it, no matter what lighting condition. Thanks!
