M240 MPG

Hi Gents,

I've been driving the 240 as my daily and I drive mostly on city roads with some spirited driving(not much). At 2000 miles mark I'm averaging 21 mpg, which seems very low comparing to the bmw advertised figure. Am I doing it wrong or is this what you guys are getting too?

I have 26 mpg since factory which is a mix of sport + and comfort. Never Eco. If I am driving spirited basically all the time it's about 20-22mpg.

Are you sat in traffic everyday? That'll eat away at mpg.

27mpg average here.

On a 60 mile thruway trip with cruise at 70 I managed 40mpg the entire way. Couldn’t believe it!

I have 2900 miles and average about 28mpg since factory across sport/comfort/eco/adaptive. Using Eco Pro, I was able to average 37mpg on a 250mi/402km road trip. Obviously I’ve had to draft traffic, crest over hills, etc., but I was able to keep a consistently high speed over the journey and not change my driving style as much as you’d think.

I’ve actually grown to really like the digital layout in eco pro and find that it is the most intuitive for trying to maximize mpg. It’s almost like a game to see how much fuel you can save lol.

How one drives plays the biggest role in gas mileage. Well, that and what one drives. Drive an Abrams tank even gently and fuel mileage will suck no matter what.

My 230i is delivering -- after 2000 miles of ownership -- better than 30mpg. My local/city driving is mostly on roads with a 45mph limit. By way of comparison my Hellcat driven on the same roads and driven the same way barely managed 15mpg.

Driving on local/city streets with frequent stops that'll crater gas mileage. 'course, the auto stop/start feature if enabled will shut off the engine at stops which should improve gas mileage but I don't know by how much.

(With my cars with auto stop/start I disable this feature. For example my 230i gets set to Sport mode right after engine start which disables auto stop/start.)

Accelerating from a dead stop can have the instantaneous MPG reading in the single digits.

If there was anything wrong with the car/engine to account for excessive gas consumption the CEL would be on. Fueling is very precise and the engine controller will not just add extra fuel on a whim.

Oh, I would not be me if I failed to mention be sure the tire pressures are correct. Under inflated tires can negatively impact fuel mileage. I would not over inflate the tires but just set the cold pressure to what is called for.

23 mpg That's mostly city and combo sport, sport plus and Eco. When during short runs on the highway with a little city it went up to 27mpg.
Some spirited driving but still in breakin period .

I was a bit surprised at some of these MPG figures until it dawned on me that the US gallon is smaller than ours!
