Think it safe to say a new one is going to be $$$$. I'd hazard a guess of $1,000 possibly more. Call a local BMW dealer parts department and get a quote.

Some years ago I bought a pair of used exhaust manifolds each with an integral converter for my 2002 Porsche Boxster. I paid $450/each vs. the over $1000/each the dealer wanted (and this was with a discount).

Be sure you handle the converter with care. If you are rough with it you risk damaging the internals. While it can withstand considerable heat and normal vibration rough handling -- or in my case road debris hitting the converter housing -- can damage the rather delicate converter proper.

A check out of a used converter involves vigorous shaking for any signs of anything loose inside and turning the item over end for end to see if anything falls out.

Any noise from inside the converter any debris falling out is a sign the converter is (probably) bad. At any rate I'd look for one that didn't do any other the above.
