"S58T" engine designation showing for G87 M2 Competition

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Came across this and found it rather intriguing. The G87 is showing that it'll come with an S58T engine. What's odd about this is that the G80/2's with the 'T' performance class engine rating are only for the higher power output Competition models.

Performance class
K= Lowest
U= Lower
M=Medium
O=Upper(standard)
T=Top

S= Super
  • The base G87 for EU and US markets has a confirmed power output of 338kW / 453hp. This makes sense since it's getting a detuned S58 which produces 20hp less than its big brothers, but it doesn't explain the 'T' engine designation.

  • The base G80/2 get the S58O engine which outputs 338kW /473hp. The G80/2 Competition models get the S58T engine which outputs 375kW / 503hp.

System error or sign of things to come?

Good find. Maybe they are just going with comp engine from the get go, regardless of manual or auto. Any idea if previous gen CS had a different letter "code" vs the comp?

I know the S58 is scheduled to receive a TU, technical update. Maybe the G87’s will be getting the updated engine?

I'm very hopeful there will be a 503hp version of the s58 with a manual in the M2. That this will be a new manual that can handle the power and may first appear in the 3.0 CSL.

This gives me more hope.

My guess is the comp G87 will have 473hp but will be auto only. Hope I'm wrong and it gets the 6MT but that's not how BMW has been operating recently

Would a technical update change anything that users would notice?

Theoretically speaking, if the M2c did get 473hp there's no reason it can't get a MT. The base G80/2 with 473hp have a MT.

I haven't read up much on the S58 but is BMW underrating it like they are the B58? There are videos of the Supra dynoing at almost 400 whp despite being listed as 382.

Who knows, once I heard the engine / exhaust sound in person it was a joke and laughable.

Yes. BMW has been underrating their motors since the e series 335. The F87C has seen dynos up to 431 whp

Yup, but that hybrid motor and battery add 500lbs to the amg gt, that c63 is going to be like 4300lbs.

Thats a shame. I really like the previous gen C63s coupe. I know it was heavy but the sound was awesome. I dont think they are even offering a C63 coupe anymore in the new gen.

I am surprised no one noticed the S58T a couple weeks ago when someone posted the 338kw(453hp) confirmation from repair manual. I certainly glossed right over it. Very strange the 338kw G87 has a S58T designation.
