hood struts

BMW service tells me i need new struts. They want $400+
I googled the part. Looks like it should cost $20-$60 each , times 2
Videos make it sound simple and quick install

Am I wrong about this? Are there any rules limiting what BMW can charge for parts and labor? Seems like this is beyond egregious. I can see maybe paying $100 or so more. Does BMW have maxiumum prices the dealer department can charge?

Yeah, get a set from Autozone for 30 or so each and snap them in place.

+1 ^. It takes less than 5 min to replace and job complexity is comparable to replacing wiper blades. Perhaps swap trunk one's too at the same time.

Stabilus is OE part, get it from FCP with lifetime warranty and free shipping, ~ $50 total for all 4:

That's obscene. Amazon $23 and you can change them yourself with nothing but a clamp (to hold other side open -- or a helper) and a flat-bit screwdriver (to pry ball-clamps open. Takes 10 minutes.

No, the dealer can charge whatever you agree to. It is a business agreement between you and the dealer and a contract when you sign on the dotted line. If you disagree with the price, just walk away.

That is why you see new car prices being gouged these days. It is like pay out of your nose or leave it. For some who need a car right now, they cannot just leave it.

Anyway, Stabilus is the brand. $10 plus shipping each on rockauto. Takes less than 1 minute each to swap out, and that was when going slow.

Few years back, Peter Pan BMW quoted 35d fuel filter at $398 (part only).
When I said it is more than I intend to pay price was reduced to $38.
That was the time I permanently lost their "business" address ...
