Detailed look at my G42 M240i custom exhaust

Twin 3" stainless "axle back" pipes with dual 4" tips. I will be putting a set of twin bullet style 3" perforated core mufflers on next week as the noise level is a bit too much at times. Work done by The Muffler Man here in OC. My guy for custom exhaust work for over 20 years. Don't need to pay thousands of $ for more sound and a little more flow, ladies and gents.

Nice work and the tips look great too! I enjoyed reading this cause I also live in OC and have been going to a great muffler guy for 10+ years (although mine is in Huntington Beach).
Have done lots of muffler deletes, including on my current 2019 M240i (and planning one on my '23 M240i currently in production)!
When you say it's a bit too loud at times, can you describe a little? Is it a little drone at certain RPMs...or cold start for that first 30 seconds?
I've always been surprised by how not-so-loud muffler deletes are on these cars (B58, N55, N54, etc) because I never touch the downpipe. I know the G42 has no resonator but I've deleted resonators in the past on some of my cars, and they don't make much difference, maybe an extra 10% volume.
Thanks!

The "loudness" is particularly noticeable on cold start (largest issue) and after upshifts. It's a deep sound with definite resonance almost like the exhaust tips are pointed at the ground type sound. Conversely it's actually quiet when part throttle between 1,000-1,500 rpm. My plan is to put resonators on next week and although as you say it won't make a huge difference, some will be better than going back stock or spending $2+k on a muffler system.

I do wish there was a way to get rid of the B58 cold start noise... (without ECU unlock and tune)

Thanks for the info! The cold start loudness doesn’t bother me cause it quiets down so quickly (~30 sec). When my ‘23 arrives next month, I plan to do exactly what you did with the muffler delete…and add a resonator only if I feel it’s a bit too loud.

👍 one things for sure, you're not having to pay $2k+ to do the delete, tips, (and resonators if you wish) and you won't be losing power to those systems either.

I eventually would like to do a muffler delete and quad tips but I was wondering do you feel that there is a loss in power does the car feel sluggish after removing the rear muffler box?

I don't think having more back-pressure is as beneficial to a turbocharged engine, certainly not the difference a muffler delete makes.

Resonators without a muffler sounds about right.

This looks like a great set up - a little hard to tell from the pictures, is this basically a complete muffler delete set up? eg: Straight Pipes directly from the axle?

Or is there some sort of muffler or resonator system replacing the stock factory muffler/box?

Can you share what size resonators you added?

Where they placed in the straight pipe sections in front of the axle?

Great set up!! Congrats

These are straight 3" pipes back pre axle. I've added twin 3" resonators upstream closer to where it branches into a Y. I'll take more pictures to give you a better idea tomorrow

3" dynomax race bullets (same one the dodge boys use for their hellcats and 392 scat pack challengers). They are installed pre axle just after the stock exhaust branches to a Y. You need a fairly straight section of pipe to put these in even though they're only 9" long.

Yes that all makes sense. Great set up! I'm preferring this to the aftermarket offerings right now. Nice work

You're welcome. My thought was is aftermarket systems make under 10 hp more than stock and cost $2k plus, why not try this provided I have a custom exhaust guy nearby. Save $1k at minimum. Best of luck with your choice! 🙂

Sounds great! I am running somewhat similar of a muffler delete setup, but with an X-pipe replacing the muffler along with two small chambers, two vibrant resonators, and a long j-pipe running along the midpipe.

Since I have a catted DP, the drone from 2-3k has been rather bothersome for myself and my passengers. I'm just about getting to the point where I'm going to take a loss and swap the whole thing out with an aftermarket catback.

Just something to keep in mind for those of you that are running an aftermarket downpipe and considering this setup. The tone is excellent but the drone that it comes with isn't just normal exhaust sound in the cabin, it's this booming low frequency resonance that is pretty hard to tolerate for long periods of time.

My plan is to wait on the downpipe with high flow cat and see how that sounds with the stock exhaust before making any changes. I'm pretty sure the DP alone will be enough for me.
