What would pick, f87 or g87 - if they both came out today and cost the same

So just curious who’d still pick the f87 (comp/LCI/OG (but not CS)over the g87, if they were given the option to have either in the spec you wanted? I’m ignoring cost here… just think it’s a good way to really find out how much people like the new M2.

For me adaptive suspension is a must and all the tech is a huge bonus. I'd pick the G87 even though I wish the weight was a bit closer to the F87.

F87 vs G87

Coming from an E92 M3 Comp the F87 did not even register until the CS. It was just missing to much. Finally I can jump back in....

G87, easy choice.

450hp
CLAR G8x chassis
G8x adaptive suspension
HUD
CF roof
iDrive 8
Actual black wheel option
CF buckets
Much better interior
No spinning crank hubs
Better proportions, more muscular design

Too many improvements over the old model to ignore.

I do not know why it matters because the F87 has been out of production since June 2021 so this is hindsight. With that said a base G87 is going to offer the level of performance that will potentially be similar to an F87 CS. The base G87 has the S58 vs N55 F87 OG and S55 F87 Comp. The G87 has M adaptive suspension versus none on the F87 OG or Comp. Better tech on the G87. Less tech, more analogue experience in a F87. Better seats in the G87. Don’t get me wrong that F87 was great for it’s time, but something better is always going to come along.

I guess there's always a few people who might vote on subjective factors but if you look at it objectively, few would want the F87.

Easily G87.

More options, more tech, vastly better interior...and it'll drive better.

I think i'd buy a CT4-V blackwing.

I dunno man, the F87 is awesome, but it's inferior in pretty much every objective metric (other than weight.)

I don't like how the G87 looks, so i'd probably just not buy one for that reason. But it's very hard for me to choose an objectively inferior performing car when price is the same. If this were a real situation, it would drive me away from BOTH cars and probably put me in a domestic.

But if I could TRADE my car right now for a brand new G87, I wouldn't do it. I admittedly like having something that's a little more obscure. BMW aren't making these any more and I kind of value the rarity/cool factor that wouldn't be present in your hypothetical if BMW were just selling these two cars right now side by side at the same price.

If I wanted auto, definitely F87 because M-DCT.
Otherwise, it'll be 50/50 for G87 MT vs F87 MT because of the weight differences. I would have to hold my judgment until actual G87 weights come out.

I like the side profile of the G87, aside from the flat hood part. Front end really disappointingly blocky. Can get used to the rear I suppose.

90% of people aren't going to drive the new car to it's full potential to notice much difference in performance, I assume.

The S58 is really the only thing that is more appealing to me.

- The looks 100% favor the F87 (although I do like the G87)
- The tech for me is overkill and will not age well
- The weight is just too much (I like small and light, the F87 is already on the heavy side for it's size)

Since the title of the thread is hypothetical, who would want a factory installed S58 in an F87?

As if we needed MORE power from that ridiculously over-engined car.

Note: (of course we do)

G-series M. As much as I love it, after driving a G-series M on a roadcourse/track side-by-side to a G87c, the chassis response fixed everything I disliked about my M4cs and F-series M2/M3/M4 in general.

It reminds me a lot about the E36 and E90/92 in how it handles, you can go over the limit, turn the steering wheel, it the front-end will still respond vs. continuing to wash away in understeer or worse yet, snap oversteer if you let off the gas pedal too fast to control understeering (ehem....F-series would do...)

Or, you can squeeze power around a corner and trust that it will hold the line and not snap back at you.

Or if you go too far with the rear end sliding, you can easily rein it back in.

Weight be damned, the G-series restores how a M cars of past used to handle like in terms of chassis response, and feels like it was built to handle its power/tq to boot.

As a drivers car, I would choose the G. Now I can't wait to see how the CS and CSL models (if ever released) will build upon that.

Most would buy the G87 if they were both offered today.

The F87 looks awesome and is lighter, but the G87 is going to handle better and be a faster car all around.

Just wait until the video reviews start coming out. Once they start posting times that exceed the capabilities of the F87 people who have animosity towards the G87 will suddenly perk up with bright eyes and wide open ears.

I would take lap times with a grain of salt as tire technology has a lot to do with hiding weight, especially for time attacks. And no true comparison can be made unless both cars are tested at the same time, same conditions.

F87 looks like a toy car, the face too cute to be taken seriously. I like the athletic, muscular appearance of G87. A proper German muscle car. G87 would be my choice.

I'd have to drive them back to back. Specs mean nothing. Looks are something but overrated. One will bring a bigger smile, that's the one to get.
