Engine fan runs at full speed, looses throttle after a small distance
2011 E90 N54 here
After a very short drive ~1000ft, the engine fans kicks-in at full speed (loud fan noise is audible in cabin) and after ~4 miles of drive I get an error icon on the cluster which signifies the engine is too hot and I lose power on the throttle. The CAr basically Idles and doesn't respond to throttle. I also saw coolant+water leaking from the valve used to fill coolant+water. it is tight to spec but I guess engine overheating is causing it to leak from the cap. Engine oil temperature on gauge reads normal (below 240 F) I'm getting these codes: - DME active codes - 2E81 - DME: Electrical coolant pump, speed deviation. 2E82 - DME: Electric coolant pump, cutoff. 2F84 - DME: Engine switch-off time, instrument cluster timer - DME timer, comparison. CD94 - Message error (ambient temperature/ relative time, 0x310), DME receiver, KOMBI transmitter. CDA8 - Message (status, KOMBI, Ox1B4) incorrect, receiver DME, transmitter KOMBI. Clearing the codes didn't help. The traction control icon is lit even after clearing codes. What's going on? It just started happening after normal city driving.

Water pump has most likely failed, especially if it is the original.

I had the same symptoms a week ago and had to leave my car 500 mi. away in Eastern New Mexico since the closest dealer was a $1000 tow. I'm going back for my car tomorrow and will attempt to bring it home with a U-Haul and car trailer. Please let us know what you find out and I'll do the same. I wasn't able to read codes yet but have a water pump and thermostat on order.

+1 sounds like the typical electric water pump and thermostat with the pump speed deviation code. The engine probably went into failsafe.

I'm seeing so many failures of this system, I believe we as a group should be recommending remove and replacement of the pump every 50k mi. I read the thermostat fails open so that's not going to leave you stranded.

You could do 50k, but that seems excessive. I would say 100k if you wanted to be proactive. The first one on my car lasted to 140k, and the replacement has 85k on it right now. I have one on hand, ready to swap out!

Made it 177k on my first car's pump. It was still good but the car under it was totaled.
Current car and pump have 134k. Maybe I should buy one to put on the shelf. Replacing every 50k seems excessive to me as well.

Oh also: to the original poster: Don't drive your car like this at all, the engine isn't getting any cooling at all, except from the oil. You could blow a head gasket very quickly.
