Water Pump Replacement

Hey everyone,

2011 335xi sedan, auto.

I've got the BSD codes (pump, OSZ, IBS, and alternator all missing) and my water pump won't stop running with the engine off and is killing my battery. I've already tried disconnecting the BSD at the alternator and IBS, with no change to the codes/pump running. I've also noticed a slow drip of coolant below where the pump is located. I won't have a chance to try the same on the pump and OSZ until i get the car to my parents' this weekend.

I had the pump + t-stat replaced back in 2019, and bought the pump through FCP Euro so I'm thinking of just going ahead and ordering a new pump now, assuming it might very well be the pump.

1) What i'm trying to decide is... should i bother doing the t-stat again now too or just do the pump alone?. I'm going to pay my indie to do the labour as I quite honestly don't feel like getting under the car with the weather turning wet and cold now... lol. Will i save on labour at all if they only do the pump? FCP's warranty will cover the cost of the parts so that doesn't matter to me.

2) Can I drive the car a short distance (40min, 35km) to my parents with the BSD short? My main concern is the pump continually running for the 30min drive and fully killing itself part way through the drive.

Thanks!
Alex

When I got a quote to do my water pump, the shop had separate labor for the WP and T stat and did not seem to credit me for the overlap--I didn't press it since I opted to leave the T stat alone.

I'd probably just leave it alone, I've been through many water pumps on my couple of e90s over the past 10 years and I've never once had a thermostat issue or replaced a thermostat.

Ah, okay. I was just looking at some DIYs and it looks like most people had to remove the thermostat to take out the pump anyways...

Another question, is there an easier way to disconnect the BSD from the water pump/test the water pump BSD without having to get under and remove the electrical connector? From the DIYs, it looks like a real b*tch even to just get the connector off...

If you are changing the pump yourself definitely change out the thermostat.

And if you do not want to pay for a flatbed truck to transport the car, or just get the tools and ramps from your parents', then why not try it if you are not getting the temperature warnings right now. You can monitor the coolant temperature with a scan tool and stop even before the warning shows up I suppose.

I would be less worried about the pump seizing up than the engine overheating. Yes a real bummer with a pump failing that early.

Looks like it is the pump. Disconnected the plug on the pump today and only had the BSD pump code come back. Tried spraying the plug and socket but didn't do anything. Looks like I'll be replacing the pump again… thankful for FCP'a warranty but in 3 years the pump price has already gone up by $100 😞

Red face N52/N54 Water Pump

Hi guys,

I hope I am not hijacking this thread.

Just have a quick question. Does anybody know if the N52 and N54 water pumps are interchangeable?

I wanna put a small turbo @ 10-12 psi on my N52. I was considering having a higher-flowing pump from the N54.

Thanks.
