What came first m240 or m2

I’m starting this discussion point with the idea that one of the 2 series were developed first or as the primary and the other was the tuned up or defined version.

My thought is that the m240 was the primary with the M2 came after. I could be totally wrong. The reasons I feel it’s the m240 is based around the headlights design, rocker panel and rear end design.

Headlights
The m2 headlights are the same with just the extra bit added to the inside. Seeing that these have no practical purpose for venting I think the headlights were designed for the m240.

Rocker panel
The way the back of the rocker panel connects in a horizontal fashion before the rear wheel. The door skin which is the same maybe the design reason for this rocker panel.

Rear Bumper
The rear bumper of the m2 seems to much larger than the the 240. While the 240s bumper seems odd the m2 s is as well.

I have not seen a m2 in person yet I am a fan of both. Both are different which is great. Even a novice can see the differences between the two models.

What are your thoughts? I am no expert but wanted to start the conversation. It truly doesn’t matter as both were designed differently.

I think the 2 series in general was designed first, but keeping in mind the ability to accommodate all variants. Parts sharing and modified parts are very common when you have to squeeze out 4-5 variants of the same chassis

The M2 is designed around the base 2 series coupe chassis. So... the 230/240 came first of course. And the chassis is off the 3/4 series chassis.

I'm betting it's basically using the same chassis as the 2 series sharing the same hood, trunk lid, and I believe the doors probably mounted in the same location for most of that. Even though the headlights are reshaped to match the styling of the M2 bodywork it's only a visually massaged version of the 2 series and most likely use the same mounting location as the sibing.

M cars are always based off the regular series cars with the single exception of the M1. Contrary to popular belief BMW doesn't have a true sports car. A real sports car is designed as such from the ground up without compromise and share nothing with a regular series car.

One could argue the Z8 or more currently the i8 are both "sports cars."
