Garage List
break in period oil change

Is the oil change recommended at end of 1200 mile break in period included in basic warranty or out of pocket?

Also, the dealership said that driving past 1200 miles without bringing into dealership for checkup will instantly void the warranty. Is this true?

1200 mile oil change is for full M cars. M240xi doesn’t have this requirement.

I personally wouldn't wait til 10K either, I'm doing my first at 4K, then letting the dealer do it at 10K, I'll do the one after at 15K, etc. Once my 3 free dealer changes are done, I'm doing them every 5K.

Send them a scan of page 262 in the manual. Do they know something BMW engineers do not know? I would follow what the engineers recommend. It does not state anywhere about this requirement whereas in a full M it does.

Ultimately, your call to change earlier than recommended time as many have mentioned in other threads.

This has been discussed a million times already. We also have a forum section dedicated to Break In and Oil Changes. Check it out.

As MPR mentioned, many of us will be doing our own oil change after 1,200 miles just for piece of mind. It is not required by BMW and it most likely will not be covered by dealer freebies.

Break in til 1200, oil change at 10k as per the manual. Enjoy the car, don't sweat the small things IMO.

More and more car manufacturers are telling owners to change at 10k with full synthetic. Even my 2018 RAM says to change at 10k.

Change dealerships, i would not let them touch my car if they paid me.
Obviously they have no clue.

I've heard that a good synthetic will last 10,000 without any breakdown. Since we're using synthetic what are your thoughts on changing the filter at 5,000 directly and having the dealer replace the oil at 10,000?

Try this link. Lots of info on what people are doing. It is a dedicated thread to oil and maintenance. Its a mix of people doing what is stated in the manual and others doing their own at varying mileage.

thank you
i really wish folks that use this forum would actually familiarize themselves with the structure of this site. Other than the "General" segment which this thread is in, there are other specific sub-areas that deal with specific areas....(specific to the G42/G87 models) you will get much better responses...and if you actually....gasp....search...or read....the relevant sub-section you may find the answer to your query.

re: the above post
perhaps it is not intuitive but to get to those sub-forums you click on the big font "G42/G87" in the header
that will bring up subject specific areas ie.
