Hey BMW, that's great and all, but can we please get some better customization? You can start by offering round analog looking gauges in the cluster like almost every other manufacturer.

^^ THIS! All well and good to have a video game-like cluster, apparently some people like that. But no reason they can't have several options and let the customer choose. Like you say, like everyone else who's gone to LCD displays at this point.

The ability to make custom skins would be epic and people would love it. Even the M3 ID8 skin is so much better than in our M240i. It’s literally just a font and gauge graphics.. it’s not like it costs anything extra for the manufacturer. Maybe one day someone like bimmercode will deep crack the ID8 to the point that we can design individual skins.

3-D navigation...because I need to see how tall nearby buildings are as I'm finding my way to the nearest E85 while out of town.

Sheesh. An ID8 to ID8.5 upgrade should be doable with a software update at the dealer, if somebody wants it and BMW can charge for it. It was unclear if ID9 also meant a display/screen change as well.

Moving to android hopefully means easy jailbreaking, and if so there will undoubtedly be custom UIs and gauge clusters through open source communities. I look forward to seeing what people do with it

Android is really just another Linux variant optimised for mobile devices (current most up-to-date Android OS kernel is Linux 5.4, whereas Linux OS releases are now at 6.1). Jailbreaking of either OSs or iDrive versions shouldn't be any more difficult or present any substantially different risks.

It's a smart move for them to move to Android because it allows them to install nearly any app from the Google app store. If the cluster as well as the infotainment are tied together using Android, then yes, it can be jailbroken, and you will be able to mod different gauges etc. If however, they are two independent systems, which is my suspicion, then you won't be able to customize the cluster.

Does this mean it’ll be on the current m2? Or the LCI?

ID 8.5 likely to arrive sooner rather than later. ID9+ will likely arrive on the G87 LCI.

From BMWBLOG
Quote:
While BMW is heavily updating its iDrive for this new generation, it’s still going to be mostly touchscreen base. In the case of the X1, it’s entirely touchscreen-based, which is sure to upset some fans (myself included). However, BMW plans on advanced voice recognition becoming the main form of interaction with iDrive, for better or worse.
I'd rather have ID 8.5 just to retain the center console ID controller knob.

Good point.I noticed at my dealer that the X1 doesn't have the idrive knob.Another huge mistake from BMW.I was hoping that idrice 9 would also get a new screen but this confirms it won't.At least the screen in the X1 looks better than the screen that the G87 is getting.

I have a feeling BMW will offer all the customization you want.

It’s just gonna cost ya.

How about they figure out iDrive 8 first?

200 miles on the clock, and my car is at the dealer, AGAIN! Now the infotainment part of the curved display is blank and just says "BMW" is bold white letters. The dealership has never seen this before. I already attempted to get iDrive to reboot multiple ways to no avail. I think I'm going back to Lexus right before the warranty expires.

The "replace battery" warning was on at 15 miles. No fault of anyone (maybe the dealer for not telling the transport driver), but while it was being transported from Cali to me in Utah, the car was in neutral with the park brake on. Unbeknownst to the transport driver or myself, that causes the car to not fully shut down and a terrible parasitic draw killed the battery.

Ahh, that sucks. Did they give you a new battery instead of just recharging it?

Regarding ID, I wouldn't be too concerned since the car is under warranty. It's likely going to need a firmware update, or they need to replace a module; all under warranty of course.

With those SW updates and subscription service features, what happens for long term owners? Will they eventually give us 100% ownership and control?

I really hate this concept but you can't fight the white.
