The reason why I'm asking is on a Mustang site and they're comparing the new s650 versus the m2. Someone commented that with the new M2 you're going to need a subscription for heated seats. However, on the standard equipment list on BMW North America website it shows heated seats and standard.

AFAIK BMW will only use subscription services in the US for equipment they elect to install in cars but you chose not to buy. A good example would be wireless charging. You didn't buy it as an option but for simplicity sake they installed it anyway. You then can monthly, annually or fully add that feature in the future.
Different answer in other countries. And my comment doesn't apply to anything that is bought as web services based where you will likely have a 3 year subscription then need to pay annually after |

I remember when the old DVD based NAV map updates were not free, you had to pay around $125 for them and they had two updates per year. Didn't take long for people to just download DVD ISOs via Torrents and burn them to disc. You had some 3rd parties out there that were charging around $25 to generate you a code to use them. I bet someone will hack subscriptions and for a fraction of the cost enable every feature. Just a matter of time.
