Fried DME on N55 ???

Hi all,

I have replaced this weekend my valve cover gasket on N55 from 2014. It takes time but have done the job many times on N54, N55.

Bad luck, I forgot to unplug the battery before starting the job and unfortunately, the + cable that I disconnected has been in contact with a ground and generated some sparks...

I was not to worry at that time since I assumed that worse case, I would need to replace a fuse but seems not...

After putting back all parts, I have tried to start the engine but even if crank running, engine was not starting. I checked all my connection but everything was ok. I have then plugged my Ista and saw a lot of faults that you can see on the picture. I though that it was the ISM as per ISTA instruction but I ave tried this ISM on another car and it worked...

I am really worried now since all post that I read are mentionning a DME failure...I would expect that some asfety would blow before the DME...

If any of you have any idea that would not cost me 2000$...If it was the DME, can I buy a used DME and just have mine cloned to the used one?

I have found the issue in my case, too bad that I sent the DME for repair before checking that but it is one of the fuse in the distributor B+ next to the battery that is down. I checked the ISM and all fuses of the car but forgot about this one...

I have requested the return of my DME asap and found a dstributor B+ unit on ebay for around 20euros.

Dodged a bullet, buddy.

I once serviced a friend's E70 X5 with the DME located under the intake manifold. Turns out that their car underwent some engine bay wash by a mechanic before me; and some of the soap got seeped into the wiring harness junctions at the DME's 3 main sockets. Long story short, a circuit concerning Valvetronic control and gas pedal signal got real funky, kept throwing faults even after replacing those units. Car drove rough the whole time. I then checked the DME's pins and found some pretty harsh oxidation witness marks on the pin location where it concerns the gas pedal and Valvetronic controls. Luckily, I was able to purchase another used DME and have ByteTronic help me clone the DME and got everything to work properly afterwards. Total spent was under 600 bucks.

These N55 DME's are in a location with lots of exposure, absolutely not the ideal place to put it. Anyways, glad you're able to resolve it without spending thousands. Happy motoring.

The terminal 15n codes are a dead giveaway. Glad everything worked out for you.

Thanks alot gusys for your feedback. Lesson learned for the disconnection of the battery every time that am working on engine bay...
