Post Complete DIY G87 M2 suspension instructions (springs, struts, shocks + torque specs)

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Attached are the full technical instructions from BMW in PDF format to replace springs, struts and shocks on the G87 (USA Model: 13DM). Instructions provide a full step-by-step on the process as well as fastener types, sizes, renewal requirements and torque specs.

Let the modding begin! These instructions are a must for anyone that's a DIY'r and plans to lower their car with springs, HAS kit or coilovers. You can also provide these instructions to an independent shop that would do the install for you. Also, useful to anyone in the future that needs to replace worn out suspension components with OEM or aftermarket parts.Note: You can substitute other tools instead of the ones BMW outlines in the instructions. For example, you can use a different type of spring compressor. Most Autoparts stores have a tool loan program for things like spring compressors, torque wrenches, etc.

I plan on getting the HAS kit and am hoping by the time I get in line for a G87 they will offer it as a port installed option. If not, I will do the install myself using these instructions just as I've done on my other bimmers.

Nice. This will come in handy when I do my spring install.

I installed a set of MSS myself on my G42 which is a little bit more complicated due to Xdrive, but still a very straight forward process.

I'm not entirely sure I'd recommend MSS at this stage though I'm trying to get some communication going with their support team, I'll see how I get to and provide a full review now I've been running the springs for almost 9 months.

I'll also be lowering my G87 when it arrives.

I took a look at MSS, but I don't see any of their kits including shorter bump stops. Did the MMS kit for your G42 come with them?

They do not. G87 front is up in stiffness, and rear is down in stiffness. But the compression has been raised in the rear on the shock. No word yet on front shock changes.

No it didn't and Ive tried contacting MSS several times and they're support initially responded when I asked about playing for shorter bump stops they started ignoring me and have been consistently ignoring me for months now although I've tried contacting different people over different channels.

As has been documented elsewhere on the forum, MSS support is absolutely atrocious and incatually think they're springs are largely faulty.

That really sucks and why I don't want any HAS kit or lowering springs without shorter bump stops, they make a huge difference.

Really wish Dinan offered suspension kits for the G8x platform, but I haven't seen anything from them to date. On the previous generation of F2x, F3x and F8x cars they offered both lowering springs with optional shorter bump stops as well as full HAS kits with shorter bump stops. I also trust them to do the required research before putting a product out.

Dinan_Engineering,
Any plans to offer lowering springs with shorter bump stops and/or a full HAS kit for the G80/82/87 in the near future?

I would stay away from the MSS HAS. Look at my thread in the G80 Suspension forum. It was a nightmare for the ones who bought the original kit. I don't usually bash vendors but it was one of my worst experience.

Yes likewise, I agree. I think their springs fail over a relatively short time span (6months) which leads them to bury their head from a support perspective.

Every companies who rushed the release of HAS for G8X had issues. IMO, I would wait for KW or M Performance HAS

Depends on what you consider near future I guess. If you are looking for like the next 30 days, than no. Right now its projecting to be more towards the middle of the year. Have had a number of spring alterations over our development between the M3 and M4 as well as RWD vs xDrive that have drawn it out a fair amount.

Happy to hear that it is in the works! G87 M2 also has different spring rates compared to the M3/4. Will you offer both lowering springs and HAS kit options for G8x M cars or just the HAS?

Just HAS. Once we get our G87 we will see if we can use the existing formula or need to make a variant set which will likely be the course.

I love how BMW themselves have realised that their owners love tinkering with their cars, so much so that they have joined the aftermarket game which really began with the later E series and in full force with the F series.

Providing instructions to the owners and workshops only strengthens their relationship with their customers.

Looks like the M Performance portfolio will be quite extensive for the G87.
