Idrive 8 curved display walkthrough.

Found a couple of videos walking through the screens. I found them helpful to see what we're in for since this will be my first all screen car.

My guess is you will love it. When I git the wife's M240 last year, I was coming from Audi's small screen and this was amazing. Once you start playing with it, you will love it and what it can do.

You can add your phone/tablet apps to it if you really want to go all out.

Genuinely one of my favorite features of this car.

Will iDrive 8.5 come to this setup in the future or is it capped at 8?

Thank you! I'll be the opposite, I'll never touch the screen.

I think you may be surprised. I at first was using the wheel mainly because I would just forget that it was a touchscreen. But it's so much easier and faster to use the screen.

Oh I don't doubt that at all, but I've yet to touch the screen in my Mazda CX50 and only use the dial, but the M2 also has much more going on so perhaps I will use the screen.

I'm just saying I don't like touch screens lol

you can control all the systems 100% only via the idrive controller in centre console and the voice commands. No need at all to touch the screen. And less distracting that way when you are driving.
Plus a "big plus" you avoid scratches and keep the screen clean from fingerprints

Their wording on yesterday's announcement on 8.5 and 9 versions about vehicles which will be updated from 8 to 8.5 was very ambiguous I would say : " The new BMW Operating System 8.5 will be gradually introduced in all midsize, executive and luxury model ranges1) from BMW. It will continue to be based on Linux and will be combined with the largest version of the BMW Curved Display. 1) BMW Operating System 8.5 compatibility by model and start of production:
BMW 7 Series; BMW iX, BMW i4, BMW X5, BMW X6, BMW X7, BMW XM gradually from July 2023; further models to follow, subject to change"

I think the MY2023 2 series including MY2023 g87 will have low or no chances at all to be upgraded to 8.5 Or will be between the last idrive 8 version models to be updated to 8.5. We shall see...

I actually agree. For me, for the most part, its easier to touch the screen when driving than messing with a wheel on the center console.

Same here, I like the dial much more. The tactile click, and not having to reach up. I also hate smudging my screen.

I believe iDrive 8.5 will be a software upgrade and iDrive 9 will be new hardware.

As far as the iDrive dial its going away. The X1 already doesn't have it and BMW is planning on phasing it out with new model releases. I'm not happy about this. I love the iDrive dial.

My regional product trainer is the source for all of this info so unfortunately I don't have a reference for anyone.

Would be a mistake to go 100% touch screen. Every time I’m in the X1 I find myself reaching for the controller.

So it sounds like my mindset of the M2 being my last is further solidified.

I agree. You should email corporate office and tell them how you feel. I think bean counters will win though. More stuff costs more money.

I do wish they would have a less "Stylized" set of gauges. Putting the tach way out of centerline and making it non-intuitive seems like a big mistake. I wonder if this tells us the manual tranny was an afterthought?
I noted one display option that moves the info nearer to the center, but it still is that bizarre hockey stick. Hopefully there will be over-air updates or something...

That's what people said as reasons to keep a blackberry. If it's done right it will be fine. Simplicity can be beautiful and functional if executed correctly.

This article makes it sound like all iDrive 8 cars will be upgraded to 8.5.

"All models that are currently fitted with the BMW Operating System 8 will get the improved 8.5 version in 2023. The first ones to benefit from the upgrade will be the 7 Series, iX, i4, X5, X6, X7, and XM starting in July, with more models to follow."
