Thump!
I haven’t had an auto in 20 years so this ZF transmission is quite a wake up call for me. Curious when you accelerate hard if you’re getting a loud “thump” on the upshifts? I think it’s normal, but I have no point of reference to compare to.

People more informed then I have said it is unburned fuel combusting in the hot exhaust system.
Love the sound. |

you can also dial down the amount of intervention.
I disliked the aggressiveness of the default setting and did dial it down to the minimum and i kinda like it that way rather than totally disable it. |

The noise when shifting is 100% fake, pumped in audio. If you watch videos of the M240i accelerating, it’s completely silent from the outside when up-shifting. There are verbals when letting off the throttle (which is unburnt fuel ignited by the hot exhaust), but nothing when shifting.
This sound can be disabled in settings. Look for “iconic sound” if you have iDrive 8. |

Adjusting the torque reduction settings in xHP Flashtool alters the audible upshift 'farts'. It certainly doesn't do this through the stereo system, and it's obviously above & beyond the OEM settings.

The upshift farts (aka DSG farts from the VAG folks) is what happens when the engine does not (purposely) have spark during the upshift, causing unburnt fuel to exit the cylinder, travel to the hot exhaust, and ignite there. This is not some fake audible noise pumped into the speakers. Here is a video explaining it, seeing as some may find this hard to believe, or something:
Also, the burbles are pretty much the same. Typically for me, they happen most when I hit the gas and get the RPMs up to 4k or higher, then either let off the gas or upshift (and then let off the gas). This ol girl will sing just fine as a stock setup, and I can hear them very well when having the car driven past me...which leaves little doubt that I am hearing the real thing while in the car, as well. |

I too love the sounds it makes. Unfortunately, most (all?) of that thump is fake and a lot of the burbles are too. I couldn’t believe it too at first since the sounds are so convincing. But just turning off “iconic sounds” will let you hear how it really sounds without the trickery.
That said, i never thought I’d like “fake sounds” but when they are this good, I don’t mind it at all. I keep “iconic sounds” on despite initially thinking I would want it off. |

I have iDrive8 in mine and have never used iDrive7. Sometimes i don’t remember which “app” has the iconic sounds though and i just say “Hey BMW, iconic sounds” and it opens up that setting. Maybe you can try that if you can’t find the setting.

I know when the transmission is in Sport+, it certainly behaves very differently and hard shifts in a way you can feel. As far as sound, I turned my setting to the lowest possible because I'm not interested in the fake noises that are piped in, it's like a girlfriend who fakes it, or so I've been told as it's never happened to me! In ID 7 go into settings and then there should be an “engine sound” option if you scroll. Turn it to reduced and you’ll be humbled real quick how the car actually sounds lol

Humbled? Most of us prefer the pure sound and have Sporty coded in as the Engine sound in the options - exhaust flap open and no fake speaker noises.

To the people who swear by the “these sounds are not fake” camp I’m curious if any of you are running on iDrive8. I ask because having the setting at “reduced” is not the same as having it “off”. The subwoofer is powerful enough to create a sound that is both felt and heard and is definitely responsible for most if not all of the “thump”.

Iconic sounds can be turned off in iDrive8. Is it truly completely off? Don’t know. But there is a noticeable difference between having it on vs. off

you might have to code ASD off to truly turn off the pumped in noise, even if you have iconic or "reduced" settings in ID8/7 respectively. if you have it in reduced, even in sport+, I believe the valves are not fully open which could be why it sounds a lot quieter from the outside
