Manual Upshifting Techniques

Hey all, been in possession now for about a week and still having some struggles smoothly upshifting this thing. I know it is clutch and engine RPM timing. My main struggle is the 1-2 shift.

I’m curious what others are thinking/trying to smooth out the process.

Do not, this is not my first 6 speed and have never had this much struggle with smooth transitions. I think some is the newness of the clutch but hey, it never hurts to ask.

I don't know how to put it into words, some may use the term "feathering."

But you need to smoothly and slowly release the clutch while applying throttle. This is going to be a function of the CDV. Releasing it quickly won't get you anywhere except frustrated (unless you remove the CDV). Also, don't try sport+ until you figure it out haha.

That's based on my F87. I don't have my G87 yet, but it sounds like it'll be similar.

The bottom line for me, three weeks of ownership, you either drive it hard, or soft. Soft being sluggishly letting the car settle after pressing in the clutch and slotting shifter into 2nd. Once it settles then you can feather the clutch out.

This process is extremely annoying getting away from stoplights and intersections where it makes you a bit uneasy being rushed.

Option 2: gas it, keep going up through gears at 6-7/10ths. The car really does not like being driven at 4-5/10ths.

Just my experience so far.

I’m starting to see this. Drive it super casual or race it. It doesn’t seem to like anywhere in between.

What mode is your engine setting? I find that on sport plus the throttle curve is pretty aggressive so there is a pretty small sweet spot.

On efficient not so bad.

The rpm is a bit lazy so it could just be a patience thing so you aren't engaging the clutch too quickly.

There there is the very small bite point on the clutch.

Basically, just gotta get used to it. I've had mine for a few weeks now and pretty much drive with engine in sport plus all the time now. Just had to get used to how the

Double clutch into 2nd when the transmission is cold. 1-2 is quite apart in BMWs.

Either feather it in, or go harder on gas, both approaches work.

The G87 doesn't strike me as any harder to shift than any other BMW. Dunno, been driving BMW MTs since 2011, the clutch action is always weird, I probably have just habituated to it.

I drove it strictly in Sport+ to learn it quickly, JustinHEMI probably explained it best, though I would disagree about avoiding S+. Once it get it down in that mode, all the rest are simple. You’ll be herky jerky for a minute but it forces you to really focus and get it down.

I installed a clutch stop today, and 90% of the 1-2 shift jerkiness disappeared. I'm sure I could have gotten the stock setup smooth with time, but the clutch stop made a huge difference in shift speed, positive clutch engagement and overall smoothness. Highly recommend it!

It helps to apply 2% throttle as soon as you release the clutch in 2nd.

You really need to release the clutch to 15% of the travel (where the clutch meat is) from full depression as soon as it hits the right rpm, else you will have clunky shifts.
