Question I want to restart roof rack conversation

I've been trying to find a roof rack for my G42, and I keep coming across this post: https://g87.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1888260

But that post is 15 months old, has anyone tried any Thule racks? Or are there any better racks than OEM ones?

I have the Thule racks I used on our previous F30 330e sedan (year 2017). Tried them on the G42 and they fit perfectly.

The OEM rack it really, nice, I can't see anything else working better. I don't have the car yet, but I do have the rack. I'd be happy to answer questions or post pictures.

That's some quality information, do you think you post some pics with them on the g42? I think a lot of people would appreciate finding your post!

It comes down to the wind noise, from what I heard, that BMW OEM racks are more noise inducing.

But from this post, OP said BMW OEM racks are also made by Thule. It does look very similar.

Depends what it’s for. If it’s for a roof box, surf board etc OEM or Thule.
If it’s for a bike(s) Sea Sucker or Tree Frog mounts depending on how many you need to carry.

The advantage of the latter is it works on all cars and is very easy to remove and store.

Roof bars are a pain to fit and remove, and significantly reduce fuel economy.

Probably recent parts that are not even updated on us website.
Here if you buy it separately you can spare more than 100bucks

I put them on maybe 2-3 times per year - so no photos.
But they are the generic aeroblade type rails with the correct footpacks for an F30 car - same mounting as the G42.
The feet can slide along the bar - so it can be used on the G42 - which is different width.
The downside is that the end of the loadbar sticks out - so you have to watch your head. But that was the same on the F30 too.
Not as "pretty" as the OEM exact width loadbars, but serve the purpose for infrequent use.

I spoke to Thule this morning (after trying RackAttack) regarding kit # 187173. It is “under review” in the US, she suggested I check back every few weeks. Also submitted an inquiry through the website, got an email that a case had been created and someone will respond. We’ll see, I guess. I wouldn’t mind ordering from Germany and paying the shipping, as the rest of the parts seem readily available it’s just the fit kit that’s a problem, but haven’t figured out an easy way to do that. OEM rack looks good, I’ve just always used Thule and don’t really need until next winter so I have some time.

I got a response from Thule to my email, kit is not available in North America as it has only been tested for the European market. Tried explaining that all the cars are built in the same factory in Mexico, but they don’t want to hear it. So I ordered fit kit 187173 from the UK, should ship tomorrow. Shipping is more than the part itself lol.

Also ordered Thule part 710750, which is the cover that allows you to leave the fit kit on and easily remove the foot pack and bars. Another thing that doesn’t seeem to be available in the US. For my personal use case this will be a good solution in the winter months, assuming it all fits/works.

Hopefully I’ll be able to confirm and post pictures soon.

This is frustrating. Probably a US product control problem, not a THULE problem. But thanks for all the information, keep updating, it is very helpful!

OEM

I can vouch for the OEM bars being pretty quiet. I got my car in March of 2022 and have had the Bars on ever since. Highway driving is fine, i simply close the sunroof cover which blocks most of the extra noise you get. not advocating against the thule bars, just adding my experience with the OEMs.

Does yours has a gap in the back bar between the cover and bar on both sides? Mine def does and that’s most narrow it will go. The OEM bars are not growing on me tbh.

I don’t see it being “really, nice”. The back bars gap is not going well tbh. If you see my above comments image. It works, but not nice.

I feel like there’s a lot of dealers lurking this forum.

The parts number for the OEM rack is 82712457810, and it also fits F44 2series gran coupe. And Thule has a fit for that [here](https://www.thule.com/en-us/roof-rac...xed%2520points) I think I'm gonna order that and see how it goes. Gonna return the OEM ones.

I installed the stealth hitch for a 1up bike rack and it’s been fantastic so far.

I’m making progress, I’ll get the rest of the parts and get it installed either this weekend or next.

Thanks. I don’t usually worry too much about that kind of stuff, but better safe than sorry I suppose.
