Unsure if I should buy...

I preordered the M2 over a year ago, and now that car is built. However I am having second thoughts about going through with the transaction.

I can't decide if its the right car for me. I currently have an X3 M40i, but I have two young kids as well. I also have a second large suv vehicle, which is the main vehicle we use for travel with the kids.

I'm liking the M2, but what kind of financial loss am I looking at if I buy the car and do not want it after a few weeks or months?

Can you share your config and location? When is it available and can the booking be taken over?

Maybe zero21 can chime in with his experience in selling soon after taking delivery.

In this market I suspect not much...

Depending on your location, if it's "weeks", the financial damage *May* not be too much - given demand is greater than supply at the moment, and if you have the carbon package, that works in your favour even more so due to production delays... None of this is financial advice but I'd consider all options, and for your sake, don't pay an ADM if you can avoid it.

You can advise the dealership you dont want it and you will lose your deposit.

If you take delivery, your loss would be your out of pocket vs what you sell it for.

Not sure what the question really is here, kind of straightforward.

He wants to know if he can recover 100% of the value of the car as paid for if he has buyer's remorse - in a pre-covid , non-recessionary period, the answer is an easy no. In the current market, with supply constraints, you might be able to get away. Key word: might. I presume that's where he/she is trying to get some guidance from people who are better tuned into the automotive industry.

Thanks - spot on. I'm not aware of the current market conditions of this vehicle, nor how bad the demand is.

And nobody will be able to give the definitive answer regarding recovering after taking delivery, paying and reselling. Anyone can speculate but that is about it. One alao needs to remember is time is money in this case (if purchased for cash or financed and then resells).

As I stated, the other option if the OP doesn't want it, is to not take delivery and risk almost guaranteed loss of deposit.

You dont need to be in the industry to provide a response of what might happen under these circumstances.

If you live in a state where you pay tax on your purchase, you'll likely lose that.

OP confirmed my thesis. Besides, this is what forums are for - discussions, reaching out for assistance/guidance and in this case, we are trying to present him/her with options/possibilities that they might not have thought of. What may happen is speculation but it will help the OP make an informed decision.

Exactly, I'm just really on the fence. I have never been so on the fence of buying a car before. I can get my deposit back fully refundable as well. But I worry I will regret not buying too.

I made this same (unfortunate) decision recently. I am losing some money on the deal I made due to out the door dealer expenses, and running some aftermarket items. However, I am also a terrible negotiator and err on the side of leniency to save myself time.

What I can tell you is circumstantial: if you grab the car at sticker price or really close to it, and you don't sacrifice convenience in the event you sell shortly afterward, not only will you not lose money, you'll likely make a few bucks.

My dealer/CA is pissed at me for the price I sold it for. I will not disclose it as that is private. YMMV.

Why don't you list your hang ups on both sides "regret buying" and "regret not buying." Then maybe we can discuss through them.

even if you can sell if for what you paid (doubtful) you still are on the hook for property and sales tax unless your state has a workaround for that. its not really worth it to be #1 in line or preorder this type of car. That is something you should do for a limited model like the CS. Personally if you are on the fence just wait until they become available on Turo or a trackday company like dreamracing. That will be wayyy cheaper than buying/leasing and then trying to dump.

Pros:
Fun car, manual transmission - last one from BMW

Don't drive much anymore under work from home

Live in ATL, snow is not a factor

Cons:

on the fence of the styling, I saw car in person and its nice but a little bland relative to the out going model

lack of rear seat space - kids are small right now but coming from an X3 m40i its a lot less.

High MSRP $68,500 + tax could get a new X5 for this type of money.

not great for road trips, but use the XC90 for those anyway.

The real question is, would I be happier in a new X5 rather than an M2. Such a different experience and feel. I do not track cars, it would be a garage queen.

Not that either a new X5 or an M2 would exactly be an amazing financial decision, you will certainly lose way more money on depreciation for an X5.

I couldn't imagine wanting both a XC90 and a X5, variety is the spice of life. (Though I don't have any kids)

Right now I have an X3 M40i 2018 and an older 2016 XC90. The xc90 is my spouses car, and the road trip vehicle. The x5 didn't offer a 3rd row at the time, I needed the extra space.
