M240 CF Roof Coming

In the Bimmerpost headlines announcing the M4CS, another nugget was buried in there...in August 2024, the M240i will be offered with an optional carbon roof. While the rest of the Globe currently gets to delete the moonroof, we in the US are stuck with it for the M240. To not only delete it, but get an even lighter lid, I'm super jazzed about that.

Just a question, but do most people who want/buy an M240 care about these things? I mean, after all, BMW saw fit to not offer any non-moonroof M240 in the US, yet it is otherwise possible on the assembly line. I, for one, am excited.

Yes, I care. If I could have optioned the Sunroof out I would have. I live in SoCal where it is oppressively hot most of the year and I don't need to be cooked in my car. More importantly it is about weight that affects the centre of gravity.

So in summation - No roof good.

That's been known for a year if you follow the big thread in General BMW

https://g87.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=901686

I definitely would have chosen the carbon roof over a moonroof.

I wouldn’t buy a car without a sunroof, only time I close mine is rain or making phone calls.

I would have optioned the carbon roof if available, though I am quite happy having a sunroof/moonroof or whatever you call it.

I am not a fan of the sunroof. At 6'4" I find sunroof reduces headroom and makes it harder for me to wear a helmet at autocross or drag strip (no road course nearby). I also never open a sunroof as I don't like the sun on my head.

I'd love an option to order my M240ix without a sunroof but it wasn't possible before. I received an allocation last week but let it go so I would get the first '24 allocation. I thought I'd get the carbon fiber roof but now I'm not sure. I've only been able to see what the interior without sunroof looks like by looking at a 230i or M2 in the configurator tool. It looks like there are still some large portions of the roof that are quite wide and low above where my head would be. The whole interior of the roof doesn't seem different, just the center area of the roof where the sunroof normally sits. I'd love to hear from someone who has actually seen a g42 or G87 in person that had no sunroof. Is headroom really increase above the driver's head or is it increased only in the center of the car? I understand that the carbon fiber roof would still have the benefit of weight-savings, simplicity and perhaps looks. Maybe not extra headroom, though.

IMHO as about 3000$/€ option in other models doesn't worth it.
It looks great, but too expensive for the weight reduction in my opinion.

Utility isn't always the driving force behind car expenses.

I would rather have the sunroof. Nobody will notice the performance difference from the CF roof/delete by itself. So may as well get more equipment for less money. Funny that BMW will charge more for the CF panel when I’m sure it costs them a fraction of the sunroof components.

If this was a track car for me, I would take the CF.

I personally wouldn't get it because it really wont make that much of a difference and the m240i isnt an all out pure performance car. Also there are longevity concerns with the exposed carbon roof delaminating over time as shown by past models with this option. I do like that it is an option though.

I'm upgrading from an 09 Civic when mine arrives in another week or 2 so I'm personally stoked to have my first car with a sunroof

Anyone know when details for the '24 G42 will be available? All the other '24 cars in BMW's range seem to be available already, or at least there are details on them.

Get a carbon-looking wrap on the roof if you like the look of CF. We have a grand tourer, not a track car. A CF roof will make no difference on this car other than aesthetics.

I spent the last couple days at go-jail-speeds in the mountains of NM and AZ and the moonroof was great for venting the cool mountain air and allowing me to see majestic peaks. How would a silly expensive CF roof have improved the experience in any noticeable way? Handling: no. Acceleration: no.

On a 911 Turbo S you save a whopping 2 lbs. Sure there’s more of a savings without a moonroof, but I don’t see our Euro friends w/o a moonroof putting down more impressive times than us in the US.

I think maybe 1% of people who option a CF roof on a production car aren't doing it for the weight savings, it's 100% cosmetic.

I'm looking at a G42 M240 to replace my F22, and I do plan on tracking the car. Yeah, an M2 would be better on track, but everything is more expensive on an M2, and the wait list is horrible. And an M240 is fast enough, especially with the ZTK package for tire/cooling bits.

One of the things against the G42 (and almost pushing me to an M2) is the mandatory sunroof. I've worn a shiny spot in the roof of my F22 from helmet pressing against the ceiling. I NEED more headroom. I love the extra light the sunroof brings into the car in the winter, but I need the headroom more.

So, yes, I'm excited about a carbon roof option on G42. However, I'm annoyed I have to spend ~$3K for the carbon roof instead of a simple sunroof delete like the 330 has.

<sigh> Yet another annoying compromise to move to a G42 M240, but I can't find anything else that fits my needs (and budget) as well as this will.

Who’s to say they will even mount the ceiling liner higher up without the sunroof? It would make sense if they did, but wouldn’t surprise me one bit if they spaced it down and used the same part with some spray foam insulation or something underside the roof panel.

I’d definitely want to confirm on that before ordering a car with sunroof deleted just to find it’s the same clearance

I have the 230 with the moonroof delete and there is about an inch to inch and half of extra head room. The headliner is mounted flush against the roof.

Bring the sport seats as an option not the carbon roof. This is not a track car... I understand a moonroof delete if you're tall, but carbon on the M-lite doesn't make much sense to me. It'll be very price for super minimal weight savings in a 3,900 vehicle. Go on a diet instead?
