running an ethanol blend in your car? consider stepping up one viscosity level.
I’m running E30 in my jb4 “tuned” m240i, I think it’s a good idea to shorten oil change intervals and increase one viscosity level. Factory is 0w20, I’m going with the optional 5w30.

https://www.blackstone-labs.com/ why guess when you could send some in and see what's really going on with it? Also anytime you start adding power it's probably a good idea to shorten oil change intervals.

All i have ever seen BMW spec for this car is ll-12fe, ll17fe or ll-14fe. Neither of which is a 5w-30 oil. Now I'm not saying a 5w-30 oil is not ok, it's just that your message implies a BMW optional recommended oil of 5w-30, if I am mistaken please educate me as i see no reference to such in the 2022 or 2023 manual. If you mean "optional" in the generic sense, well then anything can be considered an optional oil depending upon who is making that call. |

Ok, thanks that helps.
It's just that the term "two viscosity grades are indicated" kinda threw me. There's a lotta oils that could be considered "optional" for this car. Me i do run a 5W-30 oil that has characteristics/specs of my choosing (HTHS. TBN, LSPI threshold etc) which is NOT a BMW spec oil (there's a huge variance in 5w30 oils). |
