I just realized my honda S2000 MY00 weights 2809 lbs… I still remeber a discussion with an Elise owner about tbe fact the S2k was too heavy. 🤭 see where we are now.

That battery (H7-60-RS) is badass! Pricey, but tempting.

Be careful because the important thing is not only to reduce weight, you also have to respect the distribution of weights between the axles according to what is specified by the manufacturer, otherwise the behavior of the car can change and we can get some unpleasant surprise. In this case it will be irrelevant because the weight reduction in percentages is not great, but in more radical preparations for competition it can be noticed.

The rear seats are typically an easy 30-40lb reduction

removing the engine and transmission will also lead to significant weight reduction!

My Caterham is 525kg kerb weight and manual M2 is 1700kg, for a 224% difference, so the characteristics are very different and there is no way to engineer the M2 to feel like the Caterham or nothing that Porsche has in it’s range that comes close, either. Weight optimization on the M2 will subtlety tweak the characteristics, but engineering wise any difference between F87 and G87 models can easily be optimised for equivalent feel or performance, with only around 10% weight difference depending on configuration. Wait, so I could just lose 40lb off my waist and pocket $1k that I’d otherwise spend on the battery? Sweet.

If you want a quiet environment with A/C and a good sound system that is isolated from the road and the vehicle can take over mundane driving tasks, it can't compete there. Although noise cancelling headphones with bluetooth audio make up quite a lot of the difference and the ride is as good as any ///M car. |

Issue is with getting a new battery. BMW has a IBS (Intelligent Battery Sensor) that connects to the battery and changing battery chemistry will create problems.
At least this is the case with F87 vehicles.

We were getting up to 40 lbs off of the oder E8X/9X chassis with our Braille battery and mounting bracket, so 37 lbs is right in line with what one should expect from a lightweight battery.

I don't think you could get a G87 down to that weight and be road legal. If that's not a requirement then I bet you could get to 3000. You could do things like tear the interior down to the metal, replace glass with plexi (or just mesh), no AC, no sound, no passenger seat. Obviously all deadening/carpeting is gone. Trunk lid gone. Carbon fiber or plexi body panels. Replace lights with non-road-legal lights. I would never do this, but I'd love to see someone ELSE do it. It would be a kind of madness, but it would be entertaining. |
