BSM G87 M2 Photoshoot

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Had a chance to meet up with DivergedM2 and take some pics of his car. Same day I got my VIN number for literally the exact same spec
He was nice enough to let me drive it too. Good day!

Maybe the first decent pics of BSM! Can confirm this car looks amazing when you use a zoom lens. The wide angle pics we've all seen make it look so bad.

Full link to all the pics. Some more will be going up later.

Could you please explain what you mean by this to a non-photographer trying to learn to take better photos?

"Can confirm this car looks amazing when you use a zoom lens. The wide angle pics we've all seen make it look so bad."

If you take a picture of a close subject with a wide angle, you get more distortion, at extremes this leads to a fish-eye effect. Things are more "bulgy."

If you instead stand further away and zoom in*, you get less distortion.

Check out the gifs and images here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perspective_distortion

Notice how the proportions change, the "leaning" of vertical lines from true, etc.

When I used to carry a SLR, a series of zoom lenses was mandatory kit, even for basic around the town shooting.

*not digital zoom, which is actually cropping.

Gotcha, so for many phone cameras they seem to default to a wider angle.

I bought a Fuji XT-5 with their 23mm prime lens (equiv to 35mm). Is 35mm good for cars you think? Or is that still too wide?

35mm is pretty wide still but it's good for a lot of use cases. Lots of people use them for close-up pictures of cars and you should have that range in any kit. I have an 18-35mm f/1.8 I use, usually comes out for close-ups, interior pics, etc.

Also have a 50-100mm f/1.8 for zoom/distance. Both Sigma ART lenses. They are great for the whole range. I also use a crop sensor camera like yours, so my 50-100mm is the equivalent of a 70-200mm full-frame lens.

For reference, this is at 35mm, standing close to the car.

This is 100mm, standing ~50 feet away. Very very different looks, similar angles. Example of how much better this looks with a zoom lens, and how the distance compresses and looks like it wasn't taken from that far away. These are my favorite types of pics to take, I love the zoom lenses.

Thank you very much! That example explains it perfectly.

Looks like I’ll finally have to get my first black car. Hopefully you guys plan to add some carbon fiber too, I’d like to see if that helps or if it’ll just blend in with everything on a black car.

Yeah, I agree with everything rcouchh said. During my SLR days I settled on two daily lenses. A 28-80mm and a 80-200mm (was doing a lot of zoom shots). Don't remember aperture ratings, but I remember they weren't great, I was a lot poorer back then. Bog standard Canon hardware, mostly.

That’s a thing with black when I had black G82 M4 with exterior carbon kit you literally couldn’t see it was carbon unless close as it just blended in with the black. The diffuser / roof etc carbon but it certainly didn’t show well

Not to derail this thread with photography talk, but I just ordered a 16-55mm lens after looking at all the options. When I was getting into taking better photos, I decided my primary goal was better photos for my travels (international), and was led to believe that 35mm (equivalent) prime would be all I ever needed and could "zoom with my feet."

Because of this thread and the examples provided, I revisited that topic and learned how drastically different "zooming with your feet" and a quality zoom lens are. Looking at comparisons, I prefer a photo taken further away zoomed in a bit, just like the examples provided here. I learned a lot about focal length and that "zoom with your feet" can be a misnomer.

I chose 16-55 because I think that range best suits my primary goal of better documenting my travels, and it's still relatively small and simple enough to meet my other goal of KISS (keep it simple stupid).

So thank you rcouchh for inspiring me to revisit my photography goals and to learn more, and others that contributed!

The Pennsylvania plates and proximity to the water remind me of that episode in the office where Michael drives into a lake blindly following GPS.

Beautiful car. Might be my new favorite color for this generation M2.

Looks amazing. Thanks for posting the pictures. I ordered this exact same spec (still waiting for allocation), and when I ordered I had not seen any good pictures of BSM G87.

I was bouncing between BSM and Brooklyn Grey, but after seeing your pictures I'm set that BSM was the right choice.

Thanks again.
