Fuel consumption

I have only driven my car about 300 miles so far but I am averaging only around 18-19 MPG in almost exclusively city driving. I am coming from a 2020 M340 and this is considerably worse. Is this normal?

I have a short commute to the office (less than 10 mi) and there's like 1.5 mi of highway time. Doing strictly that, I average around 23.5-24. Driving in comfort mode 98% of the time except for when I find a stretch of open pavement... I click it up into sport and get on it.

I would say that's low enough to be unusual, but maybe there are contributing factors, like running the AC up high? Are you in sport mode a lot?

No sport mode. I am in south Florida and it’s been obscenely hot so AC is always running pretty high but that was always the case with my last car as well.

Hmm, definitely odd! Even up here in the dead of winter, heat up on blast, the worst I was seeing was around 22. Roads to the office range in speed from 25-45. I noticed my fuel economy improve by like .5 MPG overall once I had like 1000 miles on it.

I've never had a tank of gas get me less than 20mpg. I run exclusively in Sport or Sport Plus

On consecutive days that I go to the office, which is 99% highway with no traffic lights I stay in the low (very low) 30's. I always sit in eco pro when I'm cruising on the highway, maybe random dips into sport plus to pass someone or whatever.

I have a similar post from about 6 months ago on a UK 230i. It gets noticeably better with run in. Give it until over 1k miles.

Also city driving I always got similar mileage to what you reported. Highway the thing got around 40 if I didn’t push it and 30-35 if I had some fun.

My recent journey of 179 miles, mixture of A, B and motorways in U.K. reporting 40.2 mpg if there figures are correct I am amazed, especially as I wasn’t dordling around on the motorway! Have a 240i xdrive.

Also, the car is very optimistic in its fuel economy reporting. I track every fill-up with Fuelly, and the calculated economy is usually 3-4 MPG (US) less than the car claims. For example, for an average tank with my highway-heavy commute and typical city errands, the car usually reports 37-40 MPG, but I usually calculate 34-36 MPG.

I too have found the car gives fuel economy numbers for what it thinks you want to see. I have mostly city driving and it’s always 1-2 MPG better then the old pen and paper math method.

Notice I’m driving a 230i lol. But yeah, I have a 50-mile round trip commute, 47 of which are interstate, so my fuel economy is pretty stellar.

I average about 16-18 city driving and 30 highway. I do drive in sport+ manual mode and comfort on highway though.

For me it has been generally more fuel efficient vs. my prior car despite more hp/torque.

I do mostly highway driving with adaptive cruise in comfort mode and my average consumption is 29 mpg. Best on a tank was 32mpg now that summer is here and construction has started which reduces the speed to 60 mph for 20 miles of the 100 mile drive.

It's likely worse for an engine to never approach 3500 rpms for years on end
