I got me the Apple CarPlay blues
Loving my new 230i (May, 2023 build) with the 18” non run flats…does everything terrifically well…except….
Cannot get the “Music” part of the CarPlay to stick. It’s “Glitch Central” since my “Genius” visit, yesterday. Every other aspect of CarPlay continues to work correctly. Any of you have any ideas on this? Not exactly looking forward to a return “Genius” visit! |

Try resetting ID8 by holding down the physical power/volume knob for like 20-30 seconds. I had issues with Carplay not connecting at all after the OTA update 2 weeks ago. Resetting ID8 fixed it.

Donny…that’s interesting. Thx. Wondering why it worked flawlessly for the 1st week of ownership? Saw “genius” yesterday… and that was the end of “Music.” I can still “message,” etc.. “Genius” switched on some services and subscriptions….perhaps that interferes in some way?

I tried the Command 8 reset…restored Music to the music location prior to the lock out. This lasts until I attempt to change music. At that point, I’m totally locked out, again. All other CarPlay features work tho! Separately…my hunch/question is Does the Music feature work separately off of BMW WiFi, while the phone/messaging works off of Bluetooth?

That’s a good idea, living! Seriously, I hadn’t thought of that. Lots of choices out there. I really have liked Apple Music over the years. Well integrated for me in other vehicles…and my home.
Which service would you switch to that is the most BMW friendly? |

I am very oldschool. I have all my music on FLAC which I play off of a USB thumbdrive in my G42. Whats nice is that I can still play my music while using all the apps in Carplay and the turn by turn directions turns down the music volume momentarily.

Yep. I finally gave up on Apple CarPlay long ago due to connectivity issues. After repeated attempts at resets to id8 and my phone I’m done
I now use Spotify for music and id8 for navigation with no issues |

For reference I use Apple CarPlay and Apple Music all the time and I have no issues with my iD8 car.
From my background in IT support years ago, I would say this is an Apple issue and not an iDrive issue based on the screenshot. Maybe contact Apple support if you have not already? |

From my experience, once Apple Music crashes, it should reload and work. This happens to me every now and then. Once CarPlay realizes that the program isn’t working it’ll close it and should work when you relaunch Apple Music.
Don’t know if there is a way to force quit an app in CarPlay. But that would be easier. I think the issue maybe if there are multiple computers access the same iTunes account, it gets the brain scramblies. |

Thx Blue! All worked perfectly….for 5 days…and then I met with the “genius” for an in service. Genius stated that my 8 was set up incorrectly. He spent 1/2 hour adding perhaps 8 free items/subscriptions. That was the death of CarPlay Music. It took 24 hours for the “adds” to load.
I have an appt tomorrow to strip everything off and do a minimum of adds, only what I really need. Maybe that will make a difference. I did talk directly with Apple earlier…of course they blamed it on the BMW Wi-Fi. |

Apple CarPlay
I use Android Auto. I had issues using it on my id8 M240. I use Norton VPN on my cellphone. I find I have to turn off VPN on my phone, and when I do Android Auto works fine in the car. If you use a VPN on your Apple, maybe.....

But you must consider compression via Bluetooth in to this. Even high bitrate on Apple Music doesn't help if you're listening on your BT device (may it be in the car or your wireless headphones), because the quality is being lowered(compressed) so BT connection can handle it. Apple Music's high bitrate only works if you're using it on a Mac that has wired headphones/speakers. Plus for highest bitrates you need an external DAC. See https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT212183 for more info. tl;dr: for listenting music in your car via wireless Apple CarPlay, it doesn't matter much what streaming service you're using, it's gonna be far from lossless quality. |

I experienced the same on my 911 with Express VPN and CarPlay. Once the VPN is turned off no issues with connectivity.
