Intakes for B58

I was going to get a CTS Turbo cold air intake for my 340i, but after researching the forums, I realized that open-air intakes could easily cause heat soak for our cars, as the turbo sits right under the intake.

So my question is, If I buy a closed air intake, like the DINAN intake, there would be no issue for heat soak or because its housing is closed instead of being open verses the CTS intake?

i have an eventuri intake, and even though it’s open for the most part, it has a big heat shield that isolates the hot side of the engine from the intake filter.

maybe you can get away with an open intake like a cts one and buy a manifold heat shield like this one: https://www.rossrperformance.com/pro...ld-heat-shield

honestly, in my eyes, if you’re gonna go aftermarket but not be able to hear the intake wooshing and throaty throttle sounds, it’s not worth it. i wouldn’t buy an enclosed system over stock

If you want turbo noises, you can just get the top and bottom (inlet) intake resonators removed and keep the stock airbox.

well i meant that there's no point of upgrading to an enclosed system since stock is just as good, you might as well not even touch it if you're not going to get any sound benefits from upgrading. monetarily, I think an enclosed system is a waste.

Good point, my reason for an intake would be the noise.

How's the Eventuri in terms of noise? Definitely the best option imo but too pricey.

it's amazing, i got it second hand which was still expensive but not as big of a hit. as you can imagine it's easy to be let down when spending that much money, and I was not at all, still makes me smile to this day almost a year later. I will note, I was always an induction noise type of person versus a loud exhaust lover, so it was right up my alley.

There's a point where an upgraded intake is recommended. Primarily with an upgraded turbo. It's a balancing act between IAT and CFM airflow. But for stock turbo, the stock airbox is perfectly fine and there's other ways to get turbo noises for those that wanna stick with that.

if you already have a open source intake (BMS), how much more induction noise is added if you were to remove the intake resonator?

If you are looking to go the cheapest route, the Kyostar MST replica intake goes for about $120-$200 and if you buy the pro ramair filter off ebay for like $120 (PR-CC-194-VS-90-BK-KIT) you can get a 900cfm + heat shielded intake system for about $300. But if you wanna go the name brand way you can get whatever intake and get the pro ram air filter. That is what I plan to do as I have the mst intake and I will replace the filter with the pro ram filter

I've been liking this one a lot so far. It's loud af, good. Iats are fine that is all overblown by people selling you $1200 intakes. A pipe that connects to the turbo with a filter on it. Clever heat shield.

I’ve got the CTS turbo open intake on my car - lots of nice swooshes and noises (see attached). Are you suggesting that the pro ram air filter is bitter than the one that comes with my kit in terms of flow?

Yes this filter has a chart for how much air it can flow and it can get as high as 900cfm.

I also noticed your engine bay has a bit of dried coolant by the charge pipe. Have you gotten your water pump checked out or your radiator?

It’s a mess I haven’t cleaned the engine bay since I swapped from the GC to DAW turbo that’s why there is coolant everywhere. Thanks for the suggestion on air filter - I’ll go ahead and order one! Hopefully I can find a place that will ship to Canada …

Nice! Yea absolutely. I'd be pretty peeved if it didn't live up to the price. I'm actually the opposite, but with turbo cars especially the intake noises are pretty cool. I have a search saved on eBay. Hope I can snag a used one

I started compiling a listing of all of the B58 intakes, I will probably have to update the thread for some of the newer options like the new 034 Motorsport intakes (Carbon version and plastic version), etc.

This may help:
