BMW M2 vs BMW 1M | New vs Old – BMW’s best baby M cars [Car Magazine]

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Quote:
BMW’s returned for another stab with the M2 following the runaway success of the original launched back in 2016. But to remind ourselves where the M2 truly originated from, we grabbed the keys to one of the 21st century’s best M cars – the 1M. CAR magazine’s James Dennison compares and contrasts the two cars.

Review is fine, I guess, but I'm getting tired of reviews comparing the G87 to cars that either cost tons more, or are 11 years old.

There are other cars out there, folks!

I want a review that compares the handling/performance of the G87 to the RS3 or CLA 45. But no one wants to do that... probably because it would be a straight beatdown.

Hell, why not a Dark Horse? I actually want to see that comparison, would be neat.

There’s plenty of reviews out there that compare the RS3 VS CLA 45 & M2.

Although you are right about the dark horse comparison does not exist.

Nothing wrong with comparing to these old cars because when they roll into a meet all eyes are on them and garner more respect from the community rather then a financed new car that really most people can get who make over 70K a year.

Rolling in with a 1M you know some one just dropped 80k+ cash at least in Canada and it’s a different flex. IMO it’s like the future E30 M3 it’s just cooler.

I think it was actually a great review and the perfect length

They do a really good job with their videos, and he is no doubt a great presenter

While their comparing an analog car to a completely digital car, it’s super cool to see the two compared

Or paid $45k for it 12 years ago.

I just loved the 1M when it came out. Still looks handsome. It was muscular and aggressive without looking like a ricer.

I wanna see them compare it to an E30 M3.

Let's see how far they can draw the line from Regensburg to San Luis Potosi.

The ultimate review: E46 M3 vs 1M vs F87 CS vs G87.

I have one, owned one in the past, missed the 1M at $2K apart on price back in 2013 (big mistake), and I’m interested in the G87.

I agree though, a comparison against the Dark Horse would be cool. Not much else in the league, especially with a manual.

While not a dark horse, I'm coming from an 18 GT prem A10 plenty of mods running high 10s NA. The G87 while having a bit less raw power has a more refined delivery, a far superior and luxurious interior and comes off the lot in terms of handling with what I had to modify to get to. I consider the G87 a huge upgrade overall and am happy to trade for.

Forgive me if I’m being obtuse here, but I genuinely can’t see the comparison to a Dark Horse. So much so that I had to Google it and make sure there wasn’t some other car than the Mustang using that moniker.

EDIT — Before you guys filet me…other than that it’s a two door coupe available with a manual. Where’s the V8 in the G87?

EDIT 2 — I’m not knocking either — the G87 isn’t enough car for me personally but it’s an awesome car, and I think that the Mustang in DH guise is actually a good value and more car (power) for your $$$. I’m probably actually choosing the Mustang, but the G87 is probably a better overall car. Kind of why I find them difficult to compare. I’m sure a lot people here would make the argument that the G87 is a great value, too. Plus, M car.

It's a true upgrade from it. But price range and hp numbers is likely the comparison?

That’s totally fair, but having driven some similar spec Mustangs (I know these are the newest), that is a bit more of a brute force type car. To me the G87 is significantly more refined. Too much of a delta to compare in that perspective, but I can see what you’re saying.

I’m not saying the lack of refinement is a bad thing — that’s exactly what I want in the Mustang.

100% more refined see my comments above lol. But exactly why I'm trading in my Coyote running 10s, and happily I might add. Plus the interior is by far hands down better.

Yeah, partly I want to know how much of a delta the DH will be from the G87 and also from its other Mustang siblings. I'd heard rumors that the DH was going to be more refined than other Mustangs (and thus maybe somewhat more comparable to the M2). I am curious if that is in any way true.

Only a few crank hp higher. Nowhere near the price tag imo coming from another iteration.

That’s an excellent point, and if true would make it more comparable.

I think part of my brain hears 5.0 V8 and just lumps it into another (not necessarily better, so to speak) category than the G87; [EDIT — even if crank HP is similar].

1M is beautiful. Great design, great dimension, great little sleeper. Modest and powerful. No scar on the hood, nice grills, Hofmeister kink, specific BMW angel eyes, gorgeous wheels… And a great classic interior with a proper driver-oriented analog cockpit.

What’s not to love?
