Car and Driver: M2 manual tested (7/28/23)
https://www.caranddriver.com/reviews...-bmw-m2-drive/
Some interesting points: - they love the engine and refinement, while still being 'playful' when you want - 0.1 seconds slower to 60 than the last m2c manual, but 0.1 second faster in the 1/4 mile - 3 feet worse 70-0mph braking than m2c (154ft vs 151ft) - 184 pounds more than the m2c (both in lightest spec) - 2 other C&D staff chime in at the bottom, 1 hates it the other likes it.

Not only it is slower and heavier vs manual M4 It is slower vs previous M2 manual It also mentions Throttle house test 30-50 acceleration in top gear is slower vs previous M2 Makes one wonder waiting for the ordered car - should we wait till 2025 - will extra 25 Hp fix the tune of the manual a year later? |

Also, some observations: * On paper, generally the G87 is about 30 lb lighter than the G82, I'm not sure what specs C&D was using to say otherwise. They didn't list it, unfortunately. * The base G87 blows the base F87 away. C&D was comparing it against a Comp, and in a straight line they are nearly the same. However, G87 handles better and brakes better. In a real track setting the G87 beats the Comp (as we know from real world track results). So no, it is "not slower than the previous M2." * Who CARES how a car accelerates 30-50 in 6th gear? This is so, so dumb a test and I've never understood it. Downshifts are a thing, use them. * Motorweek recorded a 60-0 stopping distance of 88 feet. Not sure what to make of the discrepancy where C&D got 70-0 of 154. Shrug. No idea, but personally I've found the braking to be excellent. |

https://www.caranddriver.com/reviews...-drive-review/ https://www.caranddriver.com/reviews...y-the-numbers/ I'm not sure where they found the "3.8 sec 0-60" but nothing in their archive supports it. The CS was quicker with a DCT, but not with a 6MT. It makes sense that they are all pretty similar 0-60: it gets rather tough for RWD front-engine manual cars to get much quicker than this without AWD or automation. The quickest front-engine RWD manual 0-60 I've seen from C&D is 3.2 sec (2013 Viper GTS). Below 4 seconds to 60, substantial increases in power lead to negligible improvements in 0-60. The difference between the C6 Z06 and ZR1 (along with C7 Z06 and ZR1) shows this pretty conclusively. So I wouldn't expect the 2025 M2 to be any quicker to 60 with the 6MT. The 30-50 times aren't much of a sign of real work drivability since the car has plenty of gears to use at these speeds, but it is an objective demonstration of what changed between F87 and G87: the car is no longer a "pocket rocket". The F87's engines were tuned for low-end torque, which plays well with a small car, but also made it tougher for the car to put down power on corner exit when driven in anger. This low end torque was great for putting around at street speeds. Engines with big torque rises in the mid-range are also (imho) much more fun when hustling the car since the engine really wakes up with revs. Low-end torque gives the impression of great power, but can be a bit of a letdown was the tach climbs and things don't change much. I think the decision to move away from the pocket rocket identity was logical given the G87's larger exterior dimensions and the fact that it is the last ICE powered M-car. I think BMW wanted it to have a broader identity, but this also means that it defies the expectations of most who drove the prior cars. This makes acceptance tougher, but I really like the personality of the G87. -Nick |
