AMG Convert Advice! C63->M2?

Hey All, Been a lurker since I used to own my M235i A few years back(3 years now wow!) and have had my eye on the new M2 After seeing one at a Jeep(yea weird) Dealer not too long ago.

I am currently in a 2017 AMG C63 and am worried I will regret getting rid of it for this car. I fell in love with the exhaust note and purr of the v8 which had me torn on getting the M2 or waiting a little longer and getting a CPO M8?

Anyone jump ship from AMG V8s to either the M2 or an M8? I was not able to hear the M2 rev and videos don't really do cars justice I've started to realize.

Am I crazy for jumping ship? Does the M8 make more sense size wise? or in terms of a "upgrade" Dimensions don't look that far off for the M2 from the C63.

Thanks!!

M2 will be the better driving car.

But if you’re more of a pure straight line speed and exhaust roar kind of guy, the M8 is the better choice for you.

Was considering an AMG C43 and probably would have had one had the local M-B dealer had one in stock. It didn't. There were cars available but the nearest one was located about 200 miles away at another dealer.

Was seriously thinking of ordering one from the local M-B dealer but before I did I had a bit of a run in with one of the M-B service advisors and it soured me on the brand.

Went next door and bought a BMW 230i. (Traded in my 2020 Dodge Challenger Scat Pack (with a 6-speed) with just 8K miles.)

After 11 months with the 230i (very good car) long story short ended up with an M2 with a 6-speed manual (like my Scat Pack had).

Never experienced one but the word was the C43 steering was "numb" but otherwise it was a good car. Would not have had a V8 but rather a 6-cylinder and with an automatic and probably 4Matic (all wheel drive).

Pretty sure I would have been happy with the C43 but I know I'm happy with the M2.

Coming from a different v-8 I originally had similar questions. You honestly cannot compare exhaust sound or straight line raw power. But the M2 power delivery is much more refined, and with something as simple as a mid pipe change the exhaust note gets closer (albeit not the same).

For me, the upgrade was a no brainer and happy to trade.

I'm converting from a 2013 RS5. I haven't gotten my G87 yet, but I have the same concern. I jumped ship mostly to be back in an m/t and wanted to try out a newer car. I prefer driving dynamics/engagement over just the V8 if I had to pick one so I think I'll live

I don't think I could go to an M8, personally. I've driven an F90 M5 and it's just a totally different car. I even found the G82 M4 m/t just a little too "lux" for me and really hoping the G87's shorter wheelbase and allegedly more linear power band does the trick for me.

Thanks Everyone for their insight! Great to hear all the positive feedback about this car or at least perceived feedback lol.

I got my build done this morning. Now to pester the dealers around me(NOVA/DC) to get a decent build time. Saw the thread about the Dealer out west who had allocations…. But doubt that would work shipping across the country haha without some $$$ attached.

Question for those who have the car…. how is the interior lighting? Im a RGB lover so I appreciate cool lightning inside haha. And is the trunk automatic? Or does it just pop up? I know this is an option on the M4/3s so doubt it would be standard on this car…. Shame they don’t offer all the tech goodies the 3/4s get lol!

The RGB is very minimal. Limited color pallete, no real options (color zones) unless you code it. Trunk isn't automatic, it's pop. No kick sensor.

I had a 2017 AMG C63 for 26k miles and from a driving dynamics stand point the M2 is at a different level. Trust me you will not be disappointed. I have also had a 2018 Porsche 718 GTS and a 2020 Porsche GT4 and do not miss any of them. The G87 is the best all around driver of the bunch. For my driving needs it is a perfect solution. Depending on your needs I recommend the carbon buckets. I had a G42 and liked it except for the seats.

Thank you for the insight! Hearing it from another owner literally in the same situation(i put 20k miles on my car too) makes me feel more comfortable After some investigating looks like I can scoop up a M4 from a fellow forum member for the same out the door price as the M2….. Now that’s a dilemma haha

I went from a C63S to a G80. Overall the G80 is night and day a better car, but I do have to admit that I miss that V8 still. The G80 is smoother and way faster, for sure, but it lacks the sound and character of the AMG V8. For what it's worth, I also still miss the NA V8 from the E93 M3 I had before the C63S.

Ex Mercedes and BMW Exc here.
I've owned and leased several 204,205 AMG's and several M cars.

While no m2 has the "sound of your 4.0L" no AMG I have owned has felt as nimble or engaging as any of my M's.

If you have any additional questions please ping me on Insta: click_id

Happy to share my perspective at further length if you have questions.

Thanks for the insight! Currently torn between getting a M2 build and waiting or picking up a M3/4 from someone on the forums Investigating GOLFRRR and their extended warranties that are sold. Wondering if they can be purchased on a car in warranty sold privately.

I'd say park your arse in anyone of these cars and find out what the butt dyno tells you.

Golf R.... still a golf.... Please don't lol.
M3/4, I'd say M3 as the M2/4 are honestly so close spec wise, and for the 20k delta is tough to say ya I'll pay more for the same lol.

If you have any questions reach out, good luck.

Speaking of muscular V8.

Have you considered a jaguar XFR with the 5 litre supercharged V8?. I have owned two, and they are the best cars I have ever owned.

Better still, there is the extremely rare XFR-S with 550 BHP and an exhaust note that sounds like the end of the world.

HAHA I misspoke the user on the forums who sells BMW warranties to us all. I would never consider a Golf R how silly I am looking at an M4 from a fellow forum member and very much liking it Passed up on a M2 allocation here in DC/VA today..... Going all in for an M3/4 at this point always loved coupes hehe.

I test drove a F Type SVR.... and while it screamed and was quick as hell. I could not see it being a daily for the price.....

It may be time to revive this thread again..

my 2015 W205 C63s AMG is starting to show it's age.

Recently had a thermostat replaced. then another engine warning light came up (within a span of 5 months) .

I think it may be time for me to bid farewell to this car after 3+ years of owning it (and it being 8 years old), as I don't want to have to keep repairing this car 8 year old c63s.

the C63s is a bloody awesome car .. but now thinking of making a switch to a more agile, smaller G87 M2.

wonder if I will regret..

Do you guys think this is a good move ?

There's no way for us to know if you will miss your old car enough to think that it was a mistake replacing it. I would highly recommend going to a BMW dealership that has a G87 and sitting in it. If none are available, I would look at a G82 M4 and see if you can test drive it. The G87 will be similar to the M4 in terms of acceleration but will drive a lot smaller and will be much more nimble and agile as the wheelbase is smaller.

Just checked out your insta - beautiful pictures of the G87 BSM M2 ..

I’ve just signed a trade in of my 2015 C63s AMG (only did 12,000 miles on it) and getting a G87 M2 in BSM..

When i test drove it, it felt so much tighter, so much more nimble , and demanding than the C63s.

Driving the Merc felt like a laid back cruiser, that is sitting on 600 bhp.. 700 N M of torque .. but it is still a laid back cruise..

The M2 is more edgy and just feels more urgent.

Isn’t that what you would want of a sports car?
