It's now broken in...

...or just broken. Hit a glancing blow to a curb in the blinding sun today at 25 mph. In addition to messing up two wheels, I don't think the steering tie rod is supposed to look like this?

Ouch, that sucks. If its bent like that, and you plan to use the rims, I would check the rim closely with the tire off for cracks.

Huge bummer man…I hope you’re okay?. My wife hit a massive pot hole what was part of state construction and it was unmarked and her wheel looked very similar to that and it needed to be replaced along with the tire. Your tire has a large cut in the sidewall and will also probably need replacing. Safety 1st. Good luck with your repairs and be sure to get an inspection and alignment too.

OK very very sorry to see this. Fortunately at a low speed. I hope the repair is direct and swift.

Time to bring the compound and some pads… it’ll buff right out.

Joke aside, this sucks man! I feel your pain!

As usual, let’s look on the bright side. Nothing major, the tie rods bending is a good sign as they took the hit and absorbed it, saving your rack. Replacing those is trivial. As is replacing wheels.

You’re back on the road in a couple of days…

Sorry this happened man.

One upside is that it shows that the wheels are probably relatively strong, if the tie rod buckled first.

Do the old timers remember that thread where a dealer employee blew the G87 OEM wheels into pieces?

Man, if 25 MPH into a curb just scuffs the wheel, what was that guy doing?

Very unfortunate, hopefully the tie rod took all the lateral impact and you are back on the road quickly. At least they are available as a separate part: https://parts.bmwnorthwest.com/p/Bmw...107885130.html

The tire cut appears to be just in the rim protection bead, but I will get it checked.

Thanks - that's what I'm hoping. Appears the part has a natural failure point to protect the steering rack; smart design.

Tie rod is pretty easy. Should have got the tire & wheel insurance that I never buy! I may have moved my new wheel purchase up a few months (Honey, those BMW wheels are expensive, it'll be cheaper...). I'm pretty sure the wheels are structurally sound; the rear is probably repairable.

Mine was a glancing blow where the curb stuck out from the others some. It did launch the right corner up in the air though.

Unfortunately with the machined finish, it may cost almost as much as a new wheel to get an equivalent finish re-machined, as it will require stripping, welding, re-paint, remachining and powdercoat to get back to the original finish. No easy fill and repaint that the non-machined finishes can be fixed with.

Edit your post..."Honey, these rims cannot be repaired, the rims are expensive and on backorder so it makes most sense to get these other rims..."

Definitely very bent. We had a supra on track go off and end up with the same looking tie-rod. You'll notice one wheel is turned while the other is straight.

I was able to drive it a couple miles home but it felt very weird. May drive it to the dealer.
