For those of us anxiously waiting for our G87 M2s, the production ramp at the San Luis Potosi plant in Mexico has been key.

August of 2023 kicked off production the 2024 Model Year for the G87 M2.

in August, 1,558 G87 M2s were produced, down about 6% from the 1,665 produced in July.

As you can see in the data below, +/- 6% seems to be in the normal month to month variation. And NO, the plant was not closed in August as some speculated.

To date, 12,380 BMW G87 M2s have been produced (Dec/2022-Aug/2023).

Below is the detailed G87 M2 monthly production data - seems to have stabilized around 1,500 or so per month:

For our BMW G42 2 series fellow platform brothers and sisters....

G42 2 Series Production in August was 1,972, down (22%) from 2,527 in July and 2,432 in June. So not a good month for G42 output.

To date, 39,680 G42 2 Series have been produced (Sep/2021 - Aug/2023)

My G87 got put into “production begins” a week early last week so I think Sept is ramping up production.

Yes, they got me temporarily depressed. That is why I was seeking out the latest stats for August.

That factory is humming, and they are still hiring like crazy.

In August they produce 9,313 total units (G87, G42 and 3-series):

I'm tracking US East Coast shipping out of Altamira port (self interest), and I see very good car carrier ship activity in and out.

It's been almost a month since any east coast cars got boats BUT there may be some hope that there are two east coast bound ships potentially with M2s on it, the Glovis Solomon and the Morning Chant. Fingers crossed my June allocation/July built M2 is on one of those boats...

I never followed the F87 too closely, but I believe 5,973 were produced in the first 12 months (Nov/2015-Oct/2016 with about 30% coming to North America).

The G87 will probably hit almost 3 times that volume in the first 12 months.

M cars are moneymakers for BMW. Big volume, big margin, big business.

This seems to happen about 2 weeks before production date, give or take. Will sit there for a bit, then jump through a bunch of steps and end up seeing quality check a few days before scheduled prod date, then final assembly and ready for transport the week of prod. Then the logistical fun starts lol.

It’s the essence of the brand, the badge was built on models of this sort. It’s what kept BMW in business.
