Bummer - so no hope of HU-H5 and iDrive 8.5 in the 2024 M2.

from the description, it seems like 8.5 is superior than the 9? and i see it has a GPS port? rather than the headache of idrive 6 with different GPS unit?

Interesting, thanks for posting.

With the X1 being the only model that I know of to have lost the idrive knob, and is the only model so far with HU6, does this mean all models will eventually lose the idrive knob? I sure hope (k)not...

If navigation data isn’t stored and only pulled from cell data, I would assume it will no longer function when connected drive expires or if the cellular technology becomes obsolete.

It says right in the document that iDrive 9 only supports touch and voice input.

I think moving away from Linux and to Open Source Android is a mistake. Linux is of course open source too, but embedded Linux firmware is nearly bullet-proof in terms of hack resistance.

There are many more nefarious bad guys looking for Android vulnerabilities than for Linux. But maybe BMW is using the 'hardened' OEM-only version of the new mobile Android, so that could be okay too.

Seems so odd that i4 gets the new HU5, but regular 3 and 4 series do not.

I4 got iDrive 8 1 year before M3 and 2 years before M4. So not surprised. EV buyers value tech, and competitors like Tesla are way ahead.

Hello everybody.
Any upcoming x1 willing to check its HU at https://www.bmwautoparts.net/ ?!
Latest we checked showed both HU4 and HU6 installed in the vehicle which is pretty strange. It’s an EU X1 destined to the Italian market, production date 2023-09-13 and it is scheduled for arrive at dealership next week!

Cheers!

Doesn't this unit mean that coding with Bimmercode and such won't be possible or am i reading this wrong?

Correct, any ECU that uses secure coding will not be able to have it's configuration changed.

Only way to access other features will be to change the vehicle order, upload a new signing file to BMW AOS (assuming you pay for access), and have a new signed CAFD created.
