Antigravity Lifepo4 Lithium Batteries

BMW has chosen to not equip the G87 M2 with the same LiFePO4 battery found in the G80/G82 M3/M4 models, instead using the cheaper/heavier 58lb AGM type battery.

Luckily, we can fix that.

Widely known for their MicroStart Jump Starter accessories, Antigravity Batteries has changed the game again with their latest Lithium-Ion Car Batteries. The newest RE-START line of batteries offers built-in WIRELESS Remote-activated Jump-Starting, plus a full Battery Management System (BMS) for the safest, longest cycle life possible. They come in exact-fit OEM sizes for most all modern Performance and Passenger Cars/Trucks. Antigravity also features full BMS and RE-START technology.

H8 Group-49 & H7 94R Battery
NEW! Lightweight Lithium Car Batteries with Wireless Remote Built-In Jump Starting! The first Intelligent Lithium-Ion Automotive Battery that won’t leave you stranded.

Antigravity Batteries has changed the game again with their latest Lithium-Ion Car Batteries. The newest RE-START line of batteries offers built-in WIRELESS Jump-Starting! That means if your battery is ever discharged, simply press the Button on our provided Keyfob, start the car and drive away! No need for a Jump-Starter, or Roadside Assistance. You don’t even have to open the hood of car to access the battery, and can do it from the safety of sitting in your car!

RE-START TECHNOLOGY: BUILT-IN JUMP-STARTING
AG's amazing RE-START Technology is the first battery ever to offer Wireless Remote-activated built-in Jump Starting. (Can also be activated manually by pressing Restart button on top of battery.) So it won’t allow you to get stranded with a dead battery! For example if you left your lights on, the intelligent Battery Management System (BMS) in each RE-START battery would put itself to sleep before being drained dead, yet save just enough energy to start your vehicle again and get you out of that emergency. And with our WIRELESS REMOTE KEYFOB you can activate the Jump-Starting without ever opening the hood of the car. Simply press the Keyfob Button, start your car and drive away.

FULL BATTERY MANAGEMENT: BUILT-IN BMS FOR SAFETY AND LONG LIFE
The Antigravity Batteries RE-START system offers the latest technology for the safest, longest life cycle possible. Our superior on-board Battery Management System (BMS) offers Safety Circuitry to prevent Over-Discharge and Over-Charge, and has Short-Circuit protections, while additionally offering Cell Balancing and Thermal protections. These advanced features of our BMS make the battery not only as safe as possible, but also extend the life of the battery by keeping the battery in the prime operating zone and not allowing damage to the battery. Therefore creating the longest possible Life Cycle. From 7-9 years are expected from the Antigravity RE-START Batteries depending on use and climate.

PERFORMANCE BENEFITS
Weight: The ultralight 60Ah Antigravity RE-START Batteries weigh in starting at 18lbs. The weight savings will lead the road in increasing your vehicle’s performance in several key areas such as handling, allowing shorter braking distances, improved acceleration and even better gas mileage.

FEATURES & BENEFITS
  • First Battery with WIRELESS Built-In Jump-Starting! Wireless Keyfob Remote actuated Emergency Jump Starting. So you won't be stranded by a dead battery ever again!
  • FULL Battery Management System (BMS) including Over-Discharge, Over-Charge, Short Circuit, Thermal Protections and Cell Balancing.
  • RE-START TECHNOLOGY: The RE-START Battery has self-restarting capabilities. It intelligently monitors its status and if it senses over-discharge it will put itself into a sleep mode, yet saves enough energy to allow you to RE-START your vehicle. Simply press the wireless keyfob or activation button on the battery.
  • OEM FITMENT: Exact Lead/Acid Replacement sizes. No additional modifications or trays necessary to install.
  • LONGER LIFE: 2x to 3x the lifecycle of lead/acid and other Lithium batteries due to full Battery Management system.
  • HIGH POWER: Up to 3x the Cranking Amps of similar sized lead/acid battery. Better Starting and higher voltage at start-up.
  • ULTRA LIGHTWEIGHT: The Antigravity RE-START Battery can be as much as 70% lighter than the Lead/Acid equivalent. This equates to roughly 40lb or more lbs of instant weight-loss just by changing out the battery! That makes the Antigravity Lithium-Ion Battery the most cost-effective weight-loss product hands-down, while offering better starting, handling and braking! A real performance value!
  • LOW SELF-DISCHARGE: The RE-START Battery does not self-discharge like Lead/Acid Batteries. It offers a longer storage time provided there are not excessive parasitic drains on the battery.
  • DURABILITY AND CAR SAFE: Much more resilient to vibration than Lead/Acid. Incredibly shock and vibration resistant; no liquids or acid inside to spill or drain out. Will not release dangerous Hydrogen while Charging and will not leak liquids that are damaging to your finish or chassis such as acid.
  • ENVIRONMENTALLY SAFER BATTERY: No Acid or Heavy Metals such as Lead, Cadmium, or Mercury. Always remember to Recycle your batteries responsibly!

Antigravity LiFePO4 Lithium Battery installation

We've been long-term testing and collecting datalogs of this battery type on a daily driver/weekend warrior M2 with no absolutely no voltage issues or starting. For those wanting to monitor battery voltage, the Antigravity Lithium Battery Tracker allows real-time battery monitoring right from your iPhone/Android device.

The Antigravity batteries come ready to install, no additional parts are needed. In this install, we used the H8-60-RS (60Ah) as it closely matches the OEM battery specs while shedding 40 lbs of weight over the stock battery. The H7/Group 94R can also be used as BMW was kind enough to provide 2 different mounting options for the hold-down cleat without the use of battery adapters or trays. 80Ah is recommended for those looking for some additional CCAs not driven regularly, while 60Ah is good for those that see mild weather and are driven daily.

Tools needed
10mm socket and wrench

OEM battery weight @ 58lbs.

Antigravity weight @ 19.11lbs, weight savings of 40lbs!

Open trunk, battery is located underneath trunk floor access cover

OEM battery location - remove holdown bracket

Remove Negative battery terminal first

Remove Positive battery terminal

Remove Battery holddown cleat

Remove BMW AGM Battery

Empty battery compartment - halfway there

Empty battery compartment, showing (2) battery cleat mounting locations

Lower Antigravity into pit and position into place

Fasten down battery holddown cleat. On OEM and H8 applications, we use the hole closest to the left due. H7 battery will have a smaller footprint and use the hole (covered in image) on right.

Fasten Positive battery terminal in place

Fasten Negative battery terminal in place

Fasten Battery holddown bracket in place

Completed install - enjoy your handywork and prepare for coding/programming

Programming and Registration

After installation is completed, the battery needs to be both coded & registered using Lithium-ion profiles either through ISTA, your favorite 3rd party device (Bimmercode/Bimmerlink), or BMW independent shop. For reference, OEM AGM battery settings are AGM/80Ah. For the Antigravity H8-60-RS, choose 60Ah Lithium-ion setting while H8-80-RS will require the 80Ah Lithium-ion setting. For the Antigravity H7-60-RS, choose 60Ah Lithium-ion setting while H7-80-RS will require the 80Ah Lithium-ion setting. This can be done at your local dealership or independent or as we'll describe shortly - at home using your iPhone. We recommend the BM3 Wifi OBDII eNet CANBUS Flash Adapter, as this also dual-compatible if you decide to flash your M2 with a BM3 tune down the road later.

IMPORTANT: Do not skip these steps or it can damage your battery long term. For the DIY user, you will need the following iOS apps and OBD reader:

Bootmod3 - BM3 Wireless OBDII WiFi eNet CANBUS Flash Adapter (V3)
https://europeanautosource.com/produ...ash-adapter-v3

Bimmercode
https://bimmercode.app

Bimmerlink
https://www.bimmerlink.app

Battery Coding

We will be using Bimmercode first to change the battery type. In our example, we will be coding/registering for H8 60 Ah Lithium-ion battery profile.

When configuring adapter type with both Bimmercode and Bimmerlink, use the ENET Cable option

Bimmercode - Select 2-Series/M2

Bimmercode: Select Engine Control Unit

Bimmercode: OEM settings of 90 Ah Battery Capacity and AGM Battery Type shown, we will be changing these values

Bimmercode: Select Battery Capacity - change to 60 Ah

Bimmercode: Select Battery Type- change to Lithium-ion

Bimmercode: Confirm selections are correct and press [Code]

Bimmercode: Coding Successful

Battery Registration

Bimmerlink: Open program and set adapter type to ENET

Bimmerlink: Choose 12V Battery

Bimmerlink: Confirm values - Press [Register New Battery] button

Battery has been properly installed and coded/registered. Any questions, please ask here in the thread.

Enjoy!

No, it is not.

This is well documented by the manufacturer, and this is why the install needs to be paired with the M Performance wing on the trunk lid.

These operating environment limits pretty well make these batteries useless in Canada if you use the car in the winter:

It looks like even the BMW Li-ion starting battery is virtually useless below -25C, going by their technical literature: https://bmwtechinfo.bmwgroup.com/sib...Attachment.pdf

It is quite normal here to not get above -30C as a daytime high for days at a time, several time each winter. Looks like sticking with AGM starter batteries is advisable in a cold climate.

Identical steps, F87 uses H8 fitment only. Just code and register for the correct model.

I’m really only here for the people who will inevitably propose that any loss in weight makes no difference, and that the upgrade is too expensive.

Let me reword his question as it’s something I would like to know as well: “how will this affect the stock weight distribution and what effect will it have on handling?” Less weight in the back usually translates to more under steer and I would rather have 40lb heavier car without any understeer
