What Did Your Dealer Require For A Deposit?
To go along side the "Are you paying a markup" thread:
What / How Much did your dealer require for a deposit when placing an order? Refundable or Non Refundable? Other things like region you are located would be helpful, but also boarding on personal info. So far from the 3 dealers I have inquired with I have $5k non refundable with an allocation, $2500 non refundable with an allocation, $1000 with no allocation and a small waitlist. This I guess is a USA centric topic as from reading Europe seems to have much different views on this. Last edited by Rate-of-Twist; 09-18-2023 at 04:58 PM.. |

$1,000 refundable deposit. This is a MD dealer in the DC area. This got me on the list waiting for an allocation. Got the allocation at the end of July.
Edit: MSRP with no markup

$1,000 refundable at one dealer for a promise of an allocation with no timeframe and no promises on pricing. The "...We get allocations all the time, we'll let you know..." kind of nonsense.
$500 at another dealer (3 days later) who had the car in stock. Same spec as my order except red brakes instead of blue, just arrived at their warehouse the day before. Went back to the first dealer in my M2 to get my deposit back. Oddly satisfying. Edit: NY dealerships |

Earlier this year when negotiating to buy a HEA car in route to the dealer the dealer wanted a $2000 *partial payment*. Could be forfeited if I failed to pay the balance due within the designated period as specified on the buy/sell order paperwork.
The attached buy/sell order had no delivery time specified. When the car arrived at the dealer and someone from the dealer called to let me know I could come and complete the purchase I showed up with my trade in (2022 BMW 230i) and paid the balance with a personal check. |

$1k 'Not Refundable' for an available allocation. A little fuzzy if it can be refunded before it gets locked in. The paperwork I signed stated it would not be refundable.
MSRP. After much drama. That had to escalate to the General Manager before I got that deal. It had been a $2,500 deposit and $5k over MSRP before that at my local dealer. My salesperson actually told me originally $1k deposit and MSRP to begin with and her sales manager told her otherwise after several weeks of back and forth. I called around all over the country and found many dealerships claiming to be at MSRP. |

They initially said they would need a deposit, then never spoke of it again. At the time they said it would be refundable and even assured me I could drive it a few miles before I signed the paperwork.
MSRP, no forced add ons, and in the end; no deposit. Emailed the dealer to get on the list in early June. Came in to the store to talk to my CA in person in late June. He hadn’t actually put me on the list yet, which I was annoyed at. We ‘built’ a car and he said I was number 7 or 8 and it could be 6-12 months before I received an allocation. Received allocation on July 12th (I believe), build was complete on July 28. My M2 is currently on the G.S and hits Baltimore today. Not too bad for how late in the game I came in. |
