M Performance Parts - Actual Aero or Just Aesthetics

Getting real close to pulling the trigger on an M2 and I was wondering...

The M Performance parts such as the front 3 piece splitter, carbon side skirts, and the carbon high and low spoilers - are these actual functional aero or simply nice aesthetics?

Not sure the intent here? Was a serious question out of curiosity. Some parts are designed for aesthetics only, I’m curious as to if there is purpose behind these parts other than just looking pretty cool

they're functional aero in the sense that they will move air around your car differently, but it's unlikely to add any performance.

Some more functional than others and more so depends on the driving application. The biggest issue for the parts mentioned by the OP, cheaper and better versions can be had in the aftermarket.

My hope was to keep the car 100% “BMW” for warranty purposes, but that may also seem like a silly thing to some

Just a little humor. I also am curious if there are any benefits but I doubt much

For those "add ons" is not a big deal to be under warranty (especially with the splitter...BMW will not do anything if it gets scraped or cracked due to any type of impact). The air inlets, different story since the need to alter the bumper. An aftermarket spoiler that is defective will be covered by the manufacturers warranty (both BMW and aftermarket are installed via double sided tape).

Bolting / gluing carbon bits to the car does absolutely nothing for performance

That is where you are wrong. Depending on your driving application, a front splitter and rear spoiler add downforce...that my friend, is a performance modification.

I agree as a general rule. Carbon antenna cover or side spats literally do nothing for the car. No hate for that that enjoy them, but that’s not what I’m talking about.

A functional splitter and spoiler should, if designed right, provide some level of added down force. My question is really around if the M Performance parts are designed with actual performance or just aesthetics in mind as I wanted to keep the car all BMW (likely foolish as well)

I would assume that there is testing on the aerodynamics of all parts such as splitters / diffusers or other aerodynamic parts by larger companies ... however I feel that it is just a pipe dream now-a-days. The same can be said in almost any market also, things that have little to no chance of causing catastrophic damage or death probably are not tested to any extent and they can get away with it by slapping a "for off road use only" sticker on it. But thats just my take on it

That’s an opinion.
Aerodynamics, however slight, play a role in handling characteristics. That’s a fact.

My understanding is that splitters work like an upsidown (airplane) wing in helping create negative pressure zones under the car. My questions are:

1. What shapes actually help with this? The plastic/carbon with the "hollow" underside strike me as probably not beneficial/optimized.

2. At what speed does this actually help?

That said - I will just buy for aesthetic reasons so I don't really care. If I was looking for actual aero I think I would go KG from Kies as they are more traditional aero splitter style from what I can tell.

No shit, which is why I asked if you have ever seen an F1 car, with hundreds of millions of dollars invested in “gluing on carbon aero parts”, which according to you, serve no purpose.

You’ve answered my question 👍

I’ll concede. I’m sure the MP parts on a G87 will definitely help you shave a few seconds while dropping your wife off at her boyfriends house

Spoken from a lightweight who has no understanding of the basic laws of physics (motion, force, optics, etc) from his boyfriends’ house.
