Tire and Wheel Insurance
With pickup pending. Curious everyones thoughts about purchasing this? I generally havent. I was offered 5 years for 3k. Roads in the NYC area are terrible but I won't drive this much in the winter months.
Opinions welcome...

I don't buy Apple Care for my phone because it's a negative ROI and if I break my phone, replacing it won't impact me financially. But, I buy good health insurance despite being healthy because if I got hit by a car, the cost of care would literally bankrupt me. Personally, I don't think I'd buy wheel/insurance at this price, but everybody's risk tolerance differs. Also - and this is a separate issue - insurance companies are absolute vultures and will do whatever they can to avoid paying out claims. Read the fine print carefully because I suspect replacing a wheel would not be a painless experience. |

What’s covered? Scratches? Breaks? I have had my car for 14 years now and the wheels look just like new.

I have a jeep for the off season so wont be changing. I think you guys got it right. Pass.
It does account for rim and or tire damage including curb rash but still would take a number of incidents to get to 3k.

I’d check the fine print. I had insurance on my wheels when I got my first bend I found out it wasn’t covered because the tire still held air… it was bent and shook all over the road, but not “broken” in terms of the contract. I felt so stupid. Paid the $100 to unbend it out of pocket, but it never really was the same. I’d just save my money next time.

Just ask yourself how much you have spent on wheel repair in the past 5 years. If it's less than 3k, then I wouldn't do it. I have done it on prior cars before I knew about the certificates you can get at discount tire for tire damage coverage. They cost like $300 to protect all 4 tires. Now if you have a habit of destroying wheels then maybe get the insurance. Otherwise I would skip it. If you get it and change your mind, you CAN get a refund of it after purchase, it's just prorated.

No, not worth it. Insuring consumables such as tires are usually a losing proposition

As far as I'm aware (correct me if I'm wrong) most of the offered warranties/service contracts are:
a) negotiable to a degree (I'm not sure what their margins are on it) b) can be purchased from any dealership and used at any dealership (I purchased a service contract from a Delaware dealer and got a discount + saved sales tax when I bought my Cayenne, but it was years ago so things may have changed) If you're in the northeast having a positive ROI is likely, especially with each tire costing around $400 and the fact that they generally replace in pairs. I'm going to consider it if the price is right (if anyone did get a deal or knows more on how to negotiate pricing on the warranties it'd be great if you could share), but would probably pass at $3k (EDIT: looks like I might be wrong on b given the PDF in M_Power_Rob’s post and reading the terms I’m even less inclined to take it given that it only covers cosmetic damage to the wheels, not replacements for bends/cracks)

So if you run over a body and damage a wheel, that may be covered as it is not a road condition???.....just what damage would NOT be caused by road conditions??? Thats a pretty big loophole. I guess anything off road, rocks etc would be covered?? |
