Whining/turbine/Fan Noise Experience
Hi everyone,
A few months back, I posted a video with an unusual noise from my new M2. Short version - in higher temperatures, the climate control system fan may make a fairly loud siren-like noise. Generally, above 95F is the range and since I'm in Phoenix, that's about 4 months out of the year. BMW has taken me on a two month journey. It has ended with: "Yes we hear it. Nothing is out of spec. So there's nothing to do." Fortunately, this does not appear to affect all vehicles. And, the cooler weather is here. So until next Spring... My YouTube vent is here: It's supposed to sound like that! Apart from that, the first 7000 miles have gone well. |

cant listen to the vid properly but i raised a concern about loud fan, or rather, when it needs to really cool down mostly after spirited driving, it would whine for couple of seconds then wind down, higher frequency noise.
They took another m2, simulated 100% fan in both and they both did the same noise so considered by design. In the end, they said there would need to be more complaints for HQ to consider a case for this. |

When my wife, who doesn’t have the best hearing, comments that it sounds like a jet getting ready to take off, that doesn’t make me feel great about the car or the brand. First world probs, though. 😉 |

Guess it’s a “feature”. Other M2’s locally haven’t made the noise, but it’s within “parameters”. Guess that’s German/Mexican engineering and US engineering support for the customer is wrong. Reminds me of the old Audi 5000 days, but I digress. 😉

Hopefully it’s not a common trait but rest assured that BMW will not address it since apparently the fan meets engineering parameters. Apparently there is not a sound parameter. But the service folks and engineers hear it. They just say it’s acceptable. |

High performance engine. Puts out lots of power and generates lots of heat. Needs a high performance cooling system. Even if one isn't making big demands of the engine it still is a big heat generator. My M2's radiator fan has made some bit of a turbo-fan whine but it is not real loud. I drive with the A/C on the windows up and with a CF roof no sun roof. It has been kind of rare that I hear the noise mainly because I don't drive the car in the hotted part of the day in real hot weather. But a few times I had the car out in 100F+ just to see how it handled the high temperature. Can't recall the specifics of when the noise occurred but when I heard it I immediately knew what it was and appreciated the fact the engine controller was doing its job to keep engine temperature in check. Had a bit of time to think about it and I recall one time I heard the noise was shortly after I returned to the car after parking it in the garage for a while. The garage is not insulated, has no ventilation and the car had the garage feeling like an oven. 'course, the car had time to heat soak considerably. I started the engine, got the A/C going, buckled up. Then heard the fan speed up for a bit. Figured it was just dealing with the heat from the car sitting in the hot garage for some time. |

For now, I’ll enjoy the cooler weather. If It returns and is obnoxious, I guess I’ll look into a replacement fan at my cost since it is within standards. |
