G87 Vs DarkHorse mustang and others…weekend car
I know they are very different cars but I’m looking for a weekend fun car, not going to track it.
Opinions please? The monstrous V8 soundtrack or nimble M2?? I have also been considering the Alfa Gulia QV too but scared of reliability issues. I want something special for a weekend car. Opinions please?? |

Just got my manual M2- also considering a dark horse- have had a ton of shelbies and a Mach1. My issue with the stangs has always been I have a 30k hertz rental underneath it all. Fit and finish is always mediocre.
Just drove my M2 home- impressions yet to come- one issue is a tiny tach which is hard to read. I had a 21 M2. |

Tach is in right corner of screen- a line that goes up that is very small for a performance car. Should be able to reconfigure look because have heads up display which only shows mph.

Press "M Mode" near your shifter and select "Sport" or "Track" and you'll get a larger centered tachometer and the tach is displayed in the HUD.

From what I’ve seen the Mustang has an odd dedication to RPM well above redline in its display. Maybe that fluctuates with various modes. Just fyi.
I felt an exceptional amount of guilt to choose the G87 over a Dark Horse or PP1. Interested to hear what others thoughts are on the topic. For me the price point motivated me to look at what else was available for the same money. Same story with my choice when looking at a new Harley Davidson Low Rider ST. I love the big V8 sound, but every time I hear an obnoxious straight pipe sounding Stang go by it did sort of make me cringe. Now, I may cringe when I hear an obnoxious exhaust on a BMW. The more things change the more they stay the same maybe. Last edited by Fastfwd; 10-01-2023 at 04:02 PM.. |

I have a hard time with the DH. Here in the US it will likely be MY25 before you are able to get a DH at MSRP if you don't already have an order in. Paying ADM on either the DH or the M2 is nutty and not a game I'm willing to play. I also don't love the DH styling, or for that matter any of the S650 styling. Somebody said early on that it looks like an Accord front end and a Camaro back end and now I can't shake that image from my mind. Also the DH with the blackout under the headlights and the extra hood stickers looks childish and highly unsophisticated to me. Certainly beneath the caliber of the car IMHO. The GT350 was a special model. The Mach 1 wasn't special but carried over lots that the GT350 was at a reasonable price (ish) The DH, at least at this point, seems both not special and not really a significant improvement over the Mach 1 and is a lesser performer to the GT350. Most importantly, I don't trust Ford. They have managed to screw up every new model launch in recent memory and this looks to be no different. Paint issues, body panel alignment, QC in general, vehicle availability… I think there will eventually be a “winner” out of the S650 Mustang - but I’m pretty sure the Dark Horse won’t be the one to own or be remembered |

There is a dynamic shift light feature that makes watching the line ("needle") unnecessary.

I put over 27K miles on my 2018 Hellcat. It was ok. However, 707hp does not make up for shortcomings in other areas. So I traded it for a 2020 Scat Pack (with a 6-speed). Decided I didn't want to own the Hellcat out of warranty. And while it didn't feel large in CA here (Benton County AR) it felt like a land barge... Scat Pack was a better drive in part because it came with high performance tires rather than all season tires (had I kept the Hellcat I would have replaced the all seasons with high performance tires) and in part because it was lighter and carried the weight lower. But 18 months and with just 8K miles on the Scat Pack I traded in the Scat Pack for a 2022 BMW 230i. Liked the 230i more even with an automatic. |

I will miss the sound of the v8 with long tubes and the raw straight line power (Mustang gets dragged, M2 will likely get autocrossed). That that said, the G87 has a more refined power delivery(and is higer than advertised), is lighter and has a smaller wheel base. The interior is leaps and bounds better than even the premium packaged interior and much better tech. At the end of the day it's personal preference but the above starts to explain how / why I made the choice. Just some things to think about when weighing your options. |

Dont let yourself be fooled...the drag potential of the G87 is crazy. With a stage 2 tune and added goodies (for a proper stage 2 tune and build), you can be in the 9s. |

Very fair statement. Just hadn't originally bought the G87 for that purpose. That said, seeing the potential to do both on this platform is awesome.

Hard Pass. As posted in the other Dark Horse Thread.....
https://g87.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh...8&postcount=70 Dark Horse Tested by Car and Driver.... https://www.caranddriver.com/reviews...k-horse-drive/ Cool but not very impressed compared to the M2 3,975 lbs for the manual 1/4 mile in 12.5 @ only 115MPH 1.07g on Trofeo R tires Price as tested: US$73,205 Motortrend did a full test of the Dark Horse, this time with the 10 speed auto. They had a glowing review and really showered it with praise, but I think they were trying too hard to downplay the negatives. Price as Tested: US$75,500 Weight as Tested: 4,028 lbs (55/45%) 1/4 mile: 12.0 @ 118.4MPH

The Darkhorse is an interesting proposition but I’m still tempted by the Gulia QV, I’m just not sure why the BM fanboys hate it so much. I realise that it is known to have a few quirks but surely with a decent warranty shouldn’t be too much of a problem?

My friend bought one, and he went out of his way to talk me out of it. The vehicle had horrendous and endless ultimately unfixable problems. Multiple electronic faults, brake system issues, engine issues, truly endless. Lovely vehicle, but don't buy it is the advice. The vehicle has also been stale for a generation and will be discontinued shortly.

Hmm shame that there are so many scary stories in regards to the Gulia QV as I think the facelift looks quite nice, and when compared to the G87, the looks are so much more sexier.
