Nice review and 2 great cars.

It's interesting how the 1M looks almost like a toy car next to the G87. The differences in size on paper are modest, but side by side are immense.

While I respect and admire the 1M, I personally have little interest in owning order cars. The changes that BMW made from the 1M/F87 to the G87 are exactly what I was looking for (except for the reduction in rear headroom).

I'm glad the 1M brought us back closer to the original M3 concept, but the G87 is the package that has the capability, performance, features that tick the boxes for me.

1M....You can place M-Performance seats lower for tall guys like Joe.

Also, every 1M I have ever seen in the flesh has an aftermarket exhaust (almost all Akrapovič) it is an expected/accepted mod.

These cars are very loud/awesome sounding with an exhaust. Not sure what it is about the car, maybe the short length, but an exhaust makes the car.

Good 1M setup with seats + good exhaust is about as good as it gets for a modern car. JMVHO

With an Akra or HMS, it is the best-sounding turbo BMW there has ever been and ever will be.

It's one of those that got away and that I'll be chasing forever, probably. Crazy that my F80 cost less in 2018 than the 1M even back then.

I'm here to say the N54 is a garbage motor but sounds leaps and bound better than the S58.

Also, was never a fan of the looks of the 1M in terms of being kinda fat looking and unproportioned but look at what we have here with the G87 lol.

Spiritual successor? Eh.

1M was the first car I was truly obsessed with as a kid back in 2011, wish I could have bought one at the time. The 2 door M itch never went away and is the sole reason I'm in a G87 now.

Exactly. The weight gain is very relative in today's world. My 4,600 lb X3 M Competition is considered the M3 of the SUV world. So when I compared it to the weight of other SUV's in its class, like it's bigger brother the X5 M, you can quickly see which one is substantially more nimble, agile & dynamic.

Yeah but the 1M has real safety feature (airbags, crumple zones, etc.). And the new M2 just has a bunch of electronic gizmos of arguable safety benefit like cameras and smart cruise and guarantee to break.

It still blow my mind how good the 1M is after all of theses years. When you take in consideration how quick was the development time and how tight were the ressources to develop it!
