Well F1 needs to approve them as well. I didn't know that's how it works but apparently the FIA put F1 in a bad spot with this announcement as F1 had not be consulted.

Andretti Global Opens New F1 Facility at Silverstone
Apr 10, 2024 Michael Andretti and Andretti Global's bid to join Formula 1 may have been slowed, but it's not been stopped. Today at Silverstone in the U.K., Andretti Global formally opened a new facility that the team says is "the next stage of its preparations to enter the FIA Formula 1 World Championship." Andretti's years-long bid to join the F1 grid hit a road block on January 31 when F1 announced that it had turned down Andretti and instead invited the organization to re-apply for admission to F1 for 2028. Reasons for the rejection included that F1 wanted Andretti to have it's own engine deal—Cadillac has announced plans to enter F1 with Andretti as a manufacturer as early as 2028—and F1 was concerned that Andretti would not be able to field a competitive entry out off the blocks. https://www.autoweek.com/racing/form...y-silverstone/ And so it begins |

BREAKING: The chairman of the United States House Judiciary Committee, Jim Jordan, has initiated a probe into Liberty Media's decision to deny Andretti's entry into Formula 1,following Mario Andretti's appearance on Capitol Hill.
Jordan has written to F1's owners, requesting explanations for the decision-making process that led to blocking Andretti's hopes. The letter, obtained by NBC, outlines a request for documents and information regarding F1's denial of Andretti's grid spot. Jordan aims to ensure that no illegal anti-competitive behavior occurred and expresses skepticism towards F1's explanations for rejecting Andretti's bid in January. “The Committee on the Judiciary is responsible for examining the sufficiency of federal competition laws to protect against monopolies and other unfair restraints on trade,” “Sports leagues, like Formula 1, operate in a notable area of antitrust law in which some degree of collusion is necessary for the creation of the product.” “However, when a sports league deviates from its rules and practices in a manner that reduces competition and depresses consumer interest in the product, the collusion may amount to anti-competitive conduct.” “The excuses put forward for denying Andretti Cadillac’s entry appear to be pretextual, arbitrary, and unrelated to Andretti Cadillac’s suitability to compete in Formula 1.” “For example, Formula 1 alleged that a new team could only add value to Formula 1 by 'competing for podiums and race wins.'” "However, the FIA had already analysed—and approved of—the technical capabilities of Andretti Cadilac to compete among current teams, and most current teams in Formula 1 do not meet Formula 1’s standard of regularly competing for 'podiums and race wins” “Formula 1 cannot have it both ways. The truth, as FIA President Muhamed Ben Sulayem explained, is that the rejection of Andretti Cadillac is 'all about money.'" “Weak teams want to be protected from competition to the detriment of consumers and an additional team would compete for prize money and sponsorships.” VIA: [motorsport.com] |

This is kind of a joke. When F1 was struggling where was Andretti then? When they needed teams he was nowhere to be found and now that F1 is thriving (Q1 2025 revenue up 54%) he wants a piece of the pie. Mostly devil’s advocate there but point still remains.

Andretti as a team owner has improved every series he has competed in, bringing in top personnel and equipment. It would be a surprise if adding him to the F1 mix didn't work. Heck, even Renault would finally have a customer (for a year or two).

One of the best lines in the letter from the Assistant Attorney General addressing the rejection of Team Andretti-Cadillac’s application. Namely, FOM's position that Team Andretti-Cadillac would not benefit F1 financially and would not be competitive, “in particular for podiums and race wins.”....
"....the vast majority of F1 teams fail to win races in a given season. In 2023, a single team won all but one race, and half the teams in F1 have failed to win a race in the past 4 seasons combined. This competitive balance has not been the hallmark of F1 racing and adding a team backed by a major U.S. car manufacturer is likely to enhance competitiveness, not reduce it." |

But Liberty and it's CEO, Greg Maffei are both USA entities...
